The Williamson Weekly
~ 2022-23 School Year, Edition 8 ~
Safety message from our Principal
Dear Williamson Families,
We are in the seventh week of school and we have had a lot of exciting things happen over the last several weeks. I would like to share a couple of Williamson Safety highlights with you today. Many of our Fourth and Fifth-grade students are participating in our PAW Patrol program that has started in the last three weeks. Right now, we have PAW Patrol students present around the school before school, at Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third-grade recesses, lunches, and at student pick-up. Our PAW Patrol students are acting as helpers to students who need support in problem-solving, joining games, and who may be looking for a friend to play with. PAW Patrol students also recognize students who are being a good example and doing their best to uphold our six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respectful, Responsible, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. We are also learning about all six of these pillars this school year. You can learn more about them on the Character Counts website: https://charactercounts.org/character-counts-overview/six-pillars/.
Another safety highlight I would like to share with you is our safety drills. Each month our students participate in multiple safety drills. This month, students participated in a three-part drill. First, they practiced a Lock Down Drill, where students are quiet, and the classrooms are dark. After the Lock Down, we moved into a Shelter-In-Place drill, where doors and windows are still locked, but teaching and activities in the classroom can resume, this is helpful if there is smoky air, a loose dog on campus, or activity nearby and the local authorities have asked that we stay indoors. After the Lock Down and Shelter-In-Place, we evacuated the building with a Fire Drill. We are required by the California Education Code to hold these three drills as well as an Earthquake Drill (or Drop and Cover Drill) multiple times throughout the school year. Our staff, school district, and safety specialists use an application called Catapult EMS to communicate with one another throughout these drills and, if there is ever a need for an actual emergency protocol to be in place, we would use Catapult EMS to communicate with the authorities as well. You can help your students with our drills by asking them how they went, what concerns they have, and if they were listening to their teacher and other staff, instead of talking with their peers. We will post when we hold a drill here in the Weekly so that you can follow up with your student at home and even with their teacher.
The last safety highlight I would like to share is focused on student behavior in a situation that is unsafe or may become unsafe. Last week, we had some students who were worried about a person parked on the street. Instead of telling an adult, they started to tell each other stories that got more and more elaborate. By the time an adult was notified about the worry, just a few minutes later, the story was extreme. After making sure that everyone was safe and communicating with the authorities to make sure that there was no threat to our school community, I went around to each of our fourth and fifth-grade classes and alerted them to the situation that was caused by exaggerating instead of seeking help. I hope that you can work with your students at home to help them to remember to seek help if they are uncomfortable and to remember their safety is dependent on them making safe choices.
If you have questions or concerns, you are always welcome to reach out to your students' teacher, contact the school office, or reach out to us through our "Comments" box on our school webpage.
Thank you for all that you do to make our school a great place for all!
Sincerely,
Leslee Cottrell, Principal
