UT Grad Behind Pokémon GO App!
The Mobile Future: A Relatively New Field in High Demand
UT Austin Grad Leads Development of Pokémon Go
By now, most of us in the digital world have heard of (and even experienced) the new Pokemon Go phenomenon. How is this mobile app game such a sensational success across the globe? Just ask this Longhorn.
“The game itself is intended to facilitate the real-life stuff,” says John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, the game's developer. The goals were to create a game that served 3 purposes: 1) Get people outdoors to exercise, 2) See the world with "new eyes" and 3) Be an "icebreaker", giving people a reason to spend time together.
But before Hanke helped create the biggest game of the year that millions of fans across the globe are playing, he was a student on the Forty Acres. Hanke earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at UT Austin in 1989 after studying in the College of Liberal Arts. Hanke talked about the game’s record-breaking popularity in a recent interview with Business Insider. Read further here for the full article.
According to Mobile Futures, the future of mobile apps is experiencing explosive growth. Consider the following:
- In 2007, the app industry didn’t exist. It took nine months to reach 1 billion apps downloaded. By year’s end, two billion apps will be downloaded—every week.
- While most apps are free or very low-cost to consumers, they are making real economic contributions. The apps economy has created at least 500,000 U.S. jobs and will grow to $46 billion in 2016.
- The average mobile American has more than 100 apps on their smartphone—and spends, on average, 127 minutes a day using them.
- 1.3 million apps are submitted to Apple’s app store alone each year.
