Staff Stuff
It's been another busy week at Arroyo Seco as the school year marches on. It's almost October! I was in Home Depot the other day and not only are the Halloween decorations out, but the Christmas decorations are in as well. Santas AND Skeletons .... I'm not ready.
We had a great turnout for the Be the Light run/walk and for the Dodger Fan Appreciation game. Check out the pictures! Be sure to also take a look at the pictures from the Performing Arts Family Game Night.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Kindness door competition and to everyone for promoting the upcoming Kindness Challenge. Seco is an amazing place!

Question of the Week
Thank you to everyone who responded to the Question of the Week about your favorite baseball movie. Sandlot was the clear favorite with numerous people quoting their favorite line, "You're killing me, Smalls!" A League of their Own was a close second ("There's no crying in baseball!"). Also mentioned were Bad News Bears, Major League, 42, and Field of Dreams (my favorite). The winner of this week's drawing is .... Jessica Meraz! Thank you to everyone who participated!
Dodger Game
Performing Arts Family Game Night
Thank you to Beka West and Kevin Fulleman for hosting the Performing Arts Family Game Night -- many Band, Choir, and Theatre students and their family members were in attendance and had a great time. Enjoy the pictures below!

Strategies for Student Success
Many of our students with diagnoses such as ADHD and autism struggle with executive functioning. However, all teenagers need help with the three areas that executive functioning impact: working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. Check out the infographic below for some additional information about executive function and then the checklist of suggestions for some ideas on how to support all of our students so that they can be successful.
Weekly Wellness
September's disposition is Empathy.
According to Brene Brown (Ph.D. LMSW), a professor at the University of Houston, empathy is the ability to take the perspective of another. It means remaining judgment-free and having the ability to recognize emotions in other people and being able to communicate them. It is feeling WITH people and therefore fuels connection.
Empathy can hold a community together, feels our pain, and fills the places where there are gaps, misunderstandings, and divisions among us. It is an emotional state essential to forming healthy relationships and communities. When individuals have high levels of empathy there is less hurt, people regulate their own behavior better, and there is more forgiveness, acceptance, and kindness. Love and compassion fuel empathy. A lack of empathy in society might be one of the root causes of a great deal of dysfunction. -Elena Aguilar, Onward
As we move into October, Arroyo Seco and our culture PD team will be pushing Kindness. We are going to encourage and motivate our students to participate in a Kindness Challenge. Hopefully, you will help encourage your students to participate, and what better way to do so than showing kindness and empathy to kids!
Check out this cute, humorous clip about empathy, and how it’s different than sympathy:
