COUNSELOR'S CORNER
What is SEL (Social-Emotional Learning)?
According to Casel.org, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is “the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”(1)
Social Emotional Learning is vital to both children and adults because we become both self-aware and socially aware. We learn to work with one another, communicate effectively, and can understand how others might feel because we recognize other’s feelings after having dealt with our own strong emotions in various settings.
District-wide, we use a program called Second Step. Our students learn skills for learning, recognize their own and others’ feelings, learn how to manage strong emotions, learn how to problem-solve, and take responsibility when making mistakes or making poor decisions. By learning SEL skills, students also learn how to connect with one another and learn how to show compassion towards one another instead of teasing one another because of their differences.
Social Emotional Learning has become a district wide goal. We want our students to be successful both now and in the future. Having skills in SEL have been proven to measure success in individuals in the workplace.
According to Google, “The seven top characteristics of success at Google are all soft skills: being a good coach, communicating and listening well, possessing insights into others…, having empathy…, being a good critical thinker and problem-solver, and being able to make connections across complex ideas.”(2)
In school, math, reading, and writing skills will continue to be vitally important, but along with these skills, our students must also learn social-emotional skills in order to express their emotions, self-regulate, get along with others, and problem-solve with their classmates and future colleagues.
