Week 9 Term 2 SFDS Newsletter

St Francis de Sales - Wednesday 29 June 2022

MARY-ANGELA'S MESSAGE

STAFF UPDATE

I’m sure many of you have heard in the media about the difficulties that schools around New Zealand have been facing when appointing new staff. The limited pool of qualified, skilled teachers is very small and many schools, like SFDS, have needed to advertise off shore to recruit new teachers. This is especially challenging for catholic schools as we need to follow the requirement to ensure that 60% of our teaching staff are practising catholics.

I am really pleased to let you know that we have been successful in recruiting an experienced teacher to St Francis de Sales School from overseas.

Denise Phillips has been appointed to a permanent, tagged (catholic) teaching position. Denise will begin her teaching in our Tangaroa team - in Tāmure, Room 5, with children in Year 0/1. A small number of children currently in Michael’s room will move into Denise’s class next term, along with all children who start school during the remainder of this year. This allows us to ensure smaller class sizes at this level.

Here is Denise’s self-introduction. I trust that you will make time to welcome Denise, and support her in settling into our school community.

Denise and her husband are searching for a two bedroom rental property nearby. This is challenging when overseas! If you can help with this, please do get in touch: principal@sfds.school.nz Thank you for your help.

We are currently finalising two more teacher appointments but not yet ready to announce these - hopefully I will be able to in next Wednesday’s newsletter.

MATARIKI BLESSING

The new light of Matariki has risen!

May it be to you a sign of resurrection and new life.

May it be to you a sign of hope in times of darkness.

May it be to you a sign of the wondrous mystery of Atua who loves you.

May it be to you a sign that the eyes of the Eternal One are ever upon you and that the presence of the Holy

One is ever with you. And may this be the cause of your rejoicing.

Go in peace.

Through Christ and in the perfect unity of the Holy Spirit,

we pray.

Amen

(thank you to the National Liturgy Office)

Take care and God bless

ARTSPLASH

After a 2-year hiatus, we are excited that Artsplash is back for 2022!

Supported by the Wellington City Council, primary schools from all over the Wellington Region come together for an extravaganza of singing, dancing and wearable art at the Michael Fowler Centre in September.

SFDS is extremely lucky to have one of our parents who is keen to have a group of year 4 - 8 students participate in a choir and perform in the singing section of Art Splash. This is a fantastic opportunity for students, especially those who enjoy singing.

If students would like to take part in the choir for this event, they will need to commit to attending the rehearsals and the performance in September.

Artsplash Performance: Tuesday 13th September in the evening

Rehearsals: Fridays, 4.30 - 5.45pm at school, starting 29th July (week 1, term 3).

Each rehearsal session will include learning singing games and vocal warm-ups, movement, fun ways to discover your singing voice and how to care for it, as well as learning the repertoire for the Artsplash performance.

Who: Open to students from Years 4 - 8

Please register your child by THIS THURSDAY 30th JUNE so that we can secure tickets to the evening concert. Please register your child/ren by emailing me on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz

On concert day, students will bus to the Michael Fowler Centre for a daytime rehearsal. There will be a cost for the bus trip.

Tickets for the evening performance will be available through the school office closer to the time for whanau to attend the evening concert.

Congratulations Stellar Dance Crew!!

Over the weekend Nadal (Rm 10) and her dance crew Stellar from The Company Nz, took part in the Hip Hop Unite NZ competition and they won Gold in the Cadet Mega Crew division. They were also selected to represent NZ in the world Champs In Portugal later this year.

We are all very proud of their achievements and hoping the girls can make the trip to Portugal!!!
