Project Work

Learners are continuing to construct and write about their coral. We also worked on adding the ocean floor of our aquarium. The kids decided that we should spread glue on a piece of cardboard and then sprinkle sand on it and that is exactly what we did! It was a great idea and we even have some sand leftover to add to our sand and water table next week! We currently have a life-size scuba diver in our aquarium and we can't wait to add to it!

*Please keep sending in newspaper, paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, and cardboard boxes.

Poetry Journals

Our poems this week taught us about 3D Shapes and Tally Marks! We also found digraphs (two or more letters that make one sound), "Bossy E" words (like, make, shape), heart words (sight words) and the spelling patterns "ou", "ow", "au" and "aw." We have secret stories that help us remember the sounds that these spelling patterns make.

ou/ow: These letters play rough and you can often hear them saying "owwwwwww."

au/aw: These letters really like each other and get really bashful and shy and they say, " awwwwwww"

You can help at home by finding these spelling patterns in the books you read together!

120th Day of School Celebration

The standard for counting in community one is up to 120 so we decided to celebrate the 120th day of school! Believe it or not the 120th day of school is fast approaching and we have several fun activities to celebrate the occasion. We would like to include you in our festivities. We ask that you work with your child to create a 120th day of school hat. All you need to do is glue/attach 120 items to an old hat. Make sure it is your learner that does the counting. The class will vote on their favorite hat at the end of the day. This is not a mandatory assignment but it would be a fun family project! Hats are due Friday, February 26th. Please let me know if you have any questions! Be creative and have fun! (This is also the day of our field trip so we will leave our hats at school and then wear them for the rest of the day when we return.)

Here are a few suggestions of items to use but please feel free to use your imagination!

Pennies, Cheerios, Fruit Loops, marshmallows, Legos, stickers, stamps, Skittles, buttons, googly eyes and construction paper.

On Friday, I sent home login information for Sumdog which is an online program that uses educational games to reinforce math, reading and writing skills. Sixth graders came to help us get started with this program. We have only explored the math portion but we will take a look at the reading and writing portion next week. The kids seem to be loving it! Please encourage your child to play at home. Let me know if you have any questions.

Daily Data

We collect data as a class daily. We use this data to create graphs and then analyze and interpret the data.

A few questions that we ask are:

-Which one had the least?

-Which one had the most?

-How many people voted in all?

-How many more people voted for _____ than ______? (This seems to be the trickiest one)

February Art

In the spirit of "love" this February, we painted hearts but not just any hearts! This art project also served as an introduction to the concept of fractions and equal parts! First, we painted our own hearts and then cut them into four equal parts. Then, we kept 1/4 of our heart and collected 3/4 of our friend's hearts.

Talk about equal or same size parts the next time you eat a pie or pizza together!

Publishing and Valentine's Day Celebration

Please join us Friday, February 12th at 1:20 to 2:00 for a Publishing and Valentine's celebration. We have been working hard on "How to" writings and we are ready to share with you. Since we LOVE writing, we thought we would celebrate our published piece and Valentine's Day all in one. Please click the link below if you would like to contribute to the celebration. Thank you to those who have signed up to help!

*If you choose to send Valentines, please send enough for each learner in our family. You may write names on the cards. Your child will deliver them during the day on the 12th. A list of names were sent home in your child's red folder on Friday. Let me know if you need another one.

Get Ready for a Very Special Community One Event

Community One will be participating in something very exciting beginning in February. We are in need of books to help make this event possible!

I have created an amazon wish list of the books that we have decided to use. We would love to have our very own class copy of each book to celebrate and enjoy for the rest of the year. If you would like to help, click below to purchase a book! Thank you in advance for supporting our love of reading!

Check with your learner about this special event after the big reveal on February 17th!

A big thank you to those of you who have purchased a book for us! We really appreciate all of the support from our parents!

Future Field Trips

February 26th: Let's Pretend Hospital Learners will be introduced to a hospital environment in a friendly, educational, and non-threatening manner. We will leave promptly at 8:00. Please make sure your learner is here on time. We are allowed to take 5 chaperones per class. Chaperones will need to meet us there as we have limited seating on the bus. The field trip is free but there will be a charge for transportation. Hopefully, we will have that information next week and then we will send home a field trip form.

April 20th: Lanark We will be learning about the conservation of wildlife and natural resources as well as conducting research on the comparison of salt water to fresh water life. Learners will have the opportunity to go fishing while we are there!

*Please click the link below to sign up to be a chaperone for the Let's Pretend Hospital on February 26th.

FreshGrade released updates that changed the icons that are viewable in your child’s Portfolio. As a parent, you will now see the new icons. Besides eliminating the red dot, other changes are that the “Meeting and Approaching Expectations” now have a high and low end, allowing Lead Learners to show a wider range of student learning.
