A Window Into Learning

Take a peek into our thinking, creating and innovating!

Valentine Candy Rotations

We invited volunteers to help in the classroom and our families sent in Valentine candy and presto we had the makings of rotations. We graphed, sorted, measured, estimated, made stacks and wrote sentences using conversation hearts. The time went by quickly and we are thankful for volunteers who make the learning happen.

A Valentine's Day Party Might Be More Popular Than the Christmas Party

There is something special with a mailbox full of Valentines addressed just to you. It was serious business to make a mailbox fitting for all that mail. It was like there was an explosion of hearts in Room 116 the day the mailboxes were made.

What A Sweet Party!

All those valentines addressed and delivered were too precious. Thanks for all the assistance from our families that made sure our party was a success. Room 116 is fortunate to have so many people loving and supporting us.

Poetry Journal

Our entry last week was in honor of President's Day. We will be focusing on contractions for the next few weeks so it was a great introduction to our upcoming learning. Please make sure the poetry journal is returned on Tuesday.

Information For the Upcoming Week

Remember that sight words are high frequency words in literature. These words need to be read accurately and instantly upon sight. Sight word schedule for the next nine weeks:
1.5: all, going, pretty
1.11: came, take
1.19: once, when
1.25: how, please
2.1: by, our
2.8: round, then
2.16: an, from
2.22: find, live
2.29: review

Make sure to return poetry journals on Tuesday. Look for a new poem on Friday.

We will be working with how to us "an" and when to use "a." By Thursday, we should be quite solid on our understanding so give us some examples and see if we have the hang of it.

In reading we are going to be identifying who is telling the story at various points in a text. This standards helps us to better comprehend what we read.

In writing, we begin to investigate nonfiction text.

In math, we are working with story problems that have adding and subtracting elements . We continue to measure. Plus we work daily on fluently knowing our math facts.

A Grandparent Can Be A Mystery Reader!

Last week's Mystery Reader was a surprise! No one had considered that a grandparent could be a Mystery Reader. She came with several books to donate to our class. She had a good pulse on first graders because her books were ones that contained some of our favorite characters. Any one that has a love for Room 116 can join us to share the joy of literacy.

A New Room Number Display

Last week, one of the members of Room 116 presented Mrs. McDevitt with a new room number display for the hallway. It is much more colorful and age appropriate than the plain, white display that came with the school. Each time Mrs. McDevitt enters the classroom and glances at the heart, she is reminded that Room 116 is full of kindness, love, curiosity and hard work. DisneyWorld might claim to be the happiest place on earth but Mrs. McDevitt thinks Room 116 has that title locked up. Thank you for supporting Room 116 and PRS.
