Thanksgiving Message From Activities Director Sean Erwin

Dear Viking Fans:

As we get close to Thanksgiving day and spending time with family and friends, I wanted to reach out to all members of our Howell family and wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving.

The Howell Activities Department certainly has many things to be grateful for this Thanksgiving holiday. As always, we’re thankful for the support of students, staff, parents, and our community. Wearing the blue and gold and representing Howell in the classroom, in our community, and in activity/club/sport is a responsibility that our student-participants take seriously. We are thankful for the young men and women we have the pleasure of working with each day that represent Howell, FHSD, and the community so well.

We are thankful for our success so far this fall. This fall our student-participants held a 3.41 cumulative GPA in the classroom while 119 fall student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors. In the community our fall programs raised $20,081 for charities and volunteered 1,057 hours in our community. Our fall programs also saw great success in their activities where we won 5 GAC South Championships, 2 District Championships, and earned 2 Final Four Appearances. In our activities and sports our students have been recognized with 53 all-conference, 13 all-district, 6 all-region, and 7 all-state team members so far. As post-season awards continue to come in we look forward to our student-participants continuing to be recognized.

As we reflect on what we are thankful for this holiday, it is important that we do not lose sight of who we are, what we represent, and where we are trying to go as an Activities Department and family. The success of our programs would not be possible without the support of students, parents, staff, passionate fans and community members. The “Nobody Rides This Ship, We All Row” motto has inspired a high level of support and we hope to continue to build on this support into 2018. I’m confident that we will continue to improve our programs as we head into the new year.

Finally, as I get ready for Thanksgiving Day I am thankful for being the Activities Director at Howell and for being able to work alongside such a great group of students, parents, staff, and community members that have come together to make the experiences and outcomes for our student-participants the best they can be.

Viking Leadership Academy Brings Dr. Brandon Orr To Howell

On Wednesday, the Viking Leadership Academy invited Dr. Brandon Orr, Director of the Positive Coaching and Sport Psychology Programs at the University of Missouri. Dr. Orr has consulted for numerous collegiate athletic departments, including Mizzou Wrestling and Men’s Basketball, focusing on high performance with athletes across football, basketball, baseball, softball, golf, swimming, diving, cross-country, track and field, softball, gymnastics, wrestling. He has also consulted with individuals from the NFL, NHL, MLB, UFC, USA Wrestling, and members of the JSOC Special Forces Community of the United States Military.

Dr. Orr brought his message of "be uncommon" to students in VLA. The emphasis of his presentation was to be a leader not just for yourself but also by "bringing others along with you." Students were asked to think about who benefits from their leadership and how they could make others around them great. Dr. Orr's visit to Howell is the first of several speakers that will visit the Viking Leadership Academy during the 2017-18 school year. The Viking Leadership Academy (VLA) meets twice monthly during Howell Time and focuses on a curriculum based leadership development program that aims to make Howell an even better place for all students and to develop lifelong leadership skills that will resonate beyond high school.

Each week we will spotlight the great staff we have at Howell that make our activities, clubs and sports possible. These Vikings put in a great deal of time to represent Howell in positives and add so much to our Howell family. Being attached to the Howell building and our community is important for not just students but also staff. This week we highlight our STUCO sponsors Jessie Altman and Katie Bangie.

Name: Jessie Altman

Activity Sponsored: Student Council

Years Sponsoring At Howell: 10 years.

Why do you choose to be a sponsor? I wanted to work with students outside of the classroom setting and to get involved in other aspects of the school.

What do you enjoy most about Howell? I feel that Howell is really a family. We have awesome students, staff, and parents who all work hard to make Howell a great place to be.

In my spare time I like to …... hang out with my three kids and binge Netflix shows!

Name: Katie Bange

Activity Sponsored: Student Council

Years Sponsoring At Howell: On year 11

Why do you choose to be a sponsor? It allows me to play a more active role in the school environment outside of the classroom. I really enjoy getting to work with students to plan school and community events.

What do you enjoy most about Howell? The sense of community beyond the classroom in order to support and help each other.

In my spare time I like to …... spend time with my kids (Cole - 11, Luke - 8, and Ella - 4), my husband, take my kids to sports practices, volunteer on PTO and keep up with my favorite soap operas.
