NEW courses in Ed Studies!
Expanded focus on specific learning needs!
Why are we expanding course offerings focused on "special education"?
70% of students who have special education needs are educated in general education courses FULL-TIME; they're not really working with "special education" teachers.
Any individual interested in an education-related career would benefit from more in-depth and varied explorations of specific learning needs and mechanisms for supporting these individuals both inside and outside the classroom.
New courses offered for Fall 2014
We have 2 new courses being taught by Dr. Kathy Koch.
Each new course is a 2-credit, 1/2-semester class.
EDUC 331: Topics in Behavior-Related Disorders
- This course will explore three particular types of exceptional needs that influence an individual's behavior: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Emotional/Behavioral Disorders.
- In addition, this course will consider how these needs can manifest in the classroom and other learning contexts and the ways in which teachers may respond to those needs. There will be some consideration of the long-term influence of these disorders on the individual's life.
- This course cannot be used to fulfill the special education requirement/ component of MAT pre-requisites.
- Course Scheduling: M/W; 2:40-4:30, first 7 weeks
EDUC 333: Topics in Giftedness and Twice Exceptional Students
- This course will explore conceptions and implications of 'giftedness' in individuals in various educational contexts and beyond, including consideration of students who are 'gifted' and have also been diagnosed with a disorder or disability.
- In addition, this course will consider legal protections of this particular student population and the long-term influence of giftedness on the individual's life.
- This course cannot be used to fulfill the special education requirement/ component of MAT pre-requisites.
- Course Scheduling: M/W; 2:40-4:30, last 7 weeks
Does this mean you can be certified to teach special education at SMCM?
In short, no. The SMCM MAT program will not offer a certification focus in Special Education, but we hope that in adding these courses to our curriculum, more "regular education" teachers will be even more prepared to respond to these students' needs in the classroom. This could mean that you earn an endorsement in special education because of the expertise you build in the undergrad. If that interests you-- talk to us!
