Save the Date - August 26, 2014
Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama State Department of Education recently announced the dates and locations for “The Future of Public Education” tour. Hosted by State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tommy Bice, the 12-stop tour will highlight important topics for students and families in Alabama, including PLAN 2020, the Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards, student testing, accountability, and the importance of parental and community involvement.
“PLAN 2020 is transforming our classrooms into learning environments where instruction is individualized and personalized in order to better prepare our students to be college or career ready when they graduate from high school,” Bice said. “We are no longer preparing children to take a test, rather, we are teaching them how to think and solve problems using real world application. In essence, we are redefining the high school graduate.”
In addition, Bice said, “PLAN 2020 is shaping education reform in our state by identifying problems with specific schools and developing plans of action to address those unique situations; evaluating teacher and principal effectiveness; and providing support and/or corrective measures when needed.”
“The Future of Public Education” tour will include stops at schools in each of the eight State Board of Education board districts, kicking off at Lee High School, 2500 Meridian Street, in Huntsville, on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Presentations will be made from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a question and answer session from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. During each visit, Dr. Bice will be joined by business and industry partners and representatives from Alabama’s Community Colleges, as well as other education stakeholders.
We hope to see you there!

Notice to Parents
Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.
Each BHS student was given a MCBOE Code of Conduct during homeroom on Tuesday, August 5, 2014. If you did not receive a copy, we have provided the link to access the 2014-15 MCBOE Code of Conduct online. Please set aside the necessary time to familiarize yourself with our system's rules and regulations. There have been several changes this year that were approved by the Madison County Board of Education on July 10, 2014.
Please complete, sign, and return the Notice of Receipt to your child's FIRST BLOCK TEACHER, to be kept on file for the duration of the school year.
You may access the complete 2014-15 Code of Conduct through this link:

Mrs. Andrea Hills, English
Mrs. Hills graduated from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee with a B.A. in English and from the University of North Alabama with a M.A.Ed. in Secondary English Education. She taught English at Booneville Middle School and Language Arts at Portland Gateview, before moving to Huntsville. Mrs. Hills will be teaching English 9 at Buckhorn this year.
Her favorite thing about teaching? "I love being around young people and the "young at heart." It is a tremendous honor to play a very small role in the lives of my students."
Mrs. Hills is originally from Middleburg, Florida, a suburb of Jacksonville. She has been married for seventeen years to her husband, Rusty. They have three children: a son Tyler (11) and twin daughters, Ashley and Ally (9). They fill their days outside of school with church activities and ball games (whichever sport is in season)!
Mrs. Hills told us she is so excited to be a part of the Buckhorn family, and we are just as excited to have her join the BHS family!!
Welcome to Buckhorn Mrs. Hills!

Buckhorn Football - From Good to Great!
New Market, Ala. – (WHNT) After two straight years of 3-7 football, David O’Connor turned the Bucks into a playoff team. The 2013 senior class [sic] can hang it’s hat on the fact they helped bring their school back to relevance in North Alabama, but the 2014 seniors [sic] want more. The motto this Fall is “from good to great,” which is self explanatory on the surface but much more complicated to achieve.
“It means coming from where you are being good, and working to be better than you were in the past,” safety Jamar McDonald said during the Bucks third practice of training camp. “We want to be better than that. We don’t want to be complacent.”
McDonald and his team have been working hard to make sure the first round is not the Bucks last round this season. Coach O’Connor knows each game is a grind and wants his players to understand how they deal with adversity is key to their success. “In games there are going to be peaks and valleys, and you need to play through the valleys and try to get back to the peaks.”
Buckhorn has it’s open date on August 22nd before opening the season August 29th in Decatur against Austin.
