Weekly Family Update #29

March 19, 2023

Principal's Message

Hello Falcon Families,

Please remember to complete the continuing student registration process. We still have almost half of our community who has not yet finished. Information and links can be found below.

I am so excited to welcome our incoming 5th grade families this week. I will be hosting an informational meeting on Wednesday March 22nd beginning at 6:00pm. You may have a student who will be joining us next year as a 6th grade student. We understand that many of you are busy and will not be able to make it to the presentation or that you have already done this in the past. No worries! We will have a recorded presentation that will be sent to all families with an incoming 6th grade student on Wednesday that contains all of the same information. You will be able to watch the presentation when it is convenient for you. We also have an extensive FAQ on the front section of our website.

All incoming 6th grade students will be receive the same information when they join us for a field trip to our campus on Thursday March 30th. I am very excited to welcome our new students.

If you have a student moving up into high school, don’t forget that this week is incoming 9th grade family night on Tuesday March 21st at Del Norte High School. More information can be found below.

Student safety is critically important to all of us at Oak Valley. We still have families that continue to double and triple park along Carmel Valley Road. This is extremely dangerous. Please be patient during drop off and pick up in our parking lot and surrounding areas. Law enforcement will ticket individuals who are not following traffic rules and those who park along private roads. If your student rides an EBike home, please make sure they are not cutting through private roads and neighborhoods like Ivy Gate and similar areas. Students need to stay on designated trails and bike lanes. Please make sure your student is following all traffic and safety rules. Student safety is critical and we need all Falcons to obey community safety rules. Thank you for your continued partnership!

PUSD 2023-2024 Continuing Student Registration is Here!

Dear Parent/Guardians,

PUSD 2023-2024 Continuing Student Registration is Here!

Online Continuing Student Registration is open from March 1- March 31, 2022. We must receive a completed digital packet for all returning students. This will allow for proper placement of your student for the 2023-2024 school year. This annual digital process will allow a family to complete one single “family” packet instead of completing one packet per student. Packets can be completed using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection.

In preparation of this process, now is the time to confirm that you know your parent login username and password. This information will be needed to complete the registration packet.

Please take a moment and ensure you can log into https://sis.powayusd.com. If you do not know your username and/or password, you can visit https://password.powayusd.com to retrieve your login credentials.

Please email your current Principal as soon as possible if you do not plan to return to PUSD for the 2023-2024 school year.

Thank you for your attention to this important process.

Celebrate Women's History and Irish American Heritage Month

Every year March is designated Women’s History Month by Presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. The theme for 2023 National Women’s History Month is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” Join us as we honor the achievements of Women.

This week I encourage all families to visit the Smithsonian Institute's Women's History Page. It is filled with incredible resources, pictures, exhibits, and further reading. You can visit the website HERE. There is so much to explore!

March is also Irish American Heritage Month. The National Archives has a webpage dedicated to the contributions of Irish American's in history. There are lots of great stories to read and resources from the past. You can check out the website HERE.

Join us as we learn about, champion, and celebrate, what makes us uniquely different as individuals and what binds us together as one Falcon Family. This is what makes us exceptional Falcons.

Leadership Training Opportunity for Oak Valley Students

Camp Invention will be at Del Sur Elementary before you know it! Each year we are excited to welcome middle school students as Leadership Interns in Training. These students play an important part in our program working with our elementary school students and instructors.

But first a little about our program...Camp Invention has offered unique STEM experiences for more than 30 years! What makes Camp Invention so special is that it guides kids to build real-life skills through real-world challenges. It’s incredible that just one week at camp can drastically shift how kids approach problem solving — but we've seen it happen firsthand as they design solutions, build prototypes and gain confidence in their own ideas. This is a high-energy, hands-on camp, and this year we are so excited for the all-new program. Check out this video https://youtu.be/wWiflzvRmJM where children take you through a day in the life of a Camp Invention camper! If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We’re looking forward to an exciting week at Del Sur's Camp Invention either June 19-23 or June 26-30! Register before the end of March to reserve one of our Leadership Inter in Training spots and take advantage of an early bird $25 discount! Use code SUM25! More information can be found HERE. For question, please contact Susan Jose at sjose@powayusd.com.

Intradistrict Transfer Timeline for 2023--2024 School Year

The PUSD transfer window is opening soon! For families who live in the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) boundaries and would like to request their student attend a PUSD school other than their school of residence, the transfer request window will open February 1, 2023 for the 2023-2024 school year. This includes incoming siblings of current students.

Transfer requests can be made on the Poway Unified School District website. Per PUSD Board Policy 5116.1(b), the window is open each year from February 1 through March 31 for the following school year. No exceptions will be made.

Please note: Decisions on transfers are made by the Student Attendance and Discipline Office, not the schools.

No Outside Food

Parents, this is a friendly reminder that outside food (fast food, pizza, etc) is not allowed on campus. Hot lunch is free for all students. If you need to bring lunch for your student, it must be lunch from home. Please do not bring Chick-Fil-A, Board & Brew, Starbucks or anything of the like. Food delivery systems such as Doordash and GrubHub are forbidden for students as well.

Bicycle, eBike, Scooter, Riding

Students may ride a bicycle, eBike, scooter, or skateboard to school. Children must wear a helmet, provide a lock for the bike, and follow safety rules/laws. A permission form, obtained from the office and also found HERE, must be completed and on file with the office for students who wish to ride their bikes to school. Bikes and other vehicles must be walked once on school grounds. No rollerblades, scooters of any kind or skateboards are allowed on campus. All modes of transport must be secured in the bike enclosure during the school day.

Updates from the Attendance Office

Requesting Early Release For Your Students

Please remember to call the Attendance Hotline to request an early release for your student. If you leave us a message, we will make our best effort to have your student waiting for you when you arrive at the Welcome Center to sign them out.

We are currently short-staffed in the office and during lunch supervision. Calling ahead will allow us to notify your student before they go to lunch. With over 750 students at lunch at one time, finding students can be challenging and time-consuming while you wait.

Please remember to call the Attendance Hotline for early release, absence & late arrivals: 858-676-6963.
