Weekly Update
We've had a great first few weeks here at Sorrick School! Our remote and in-person students are both doing a fantastic job getting acclimated to routines and procedures. Just a reminder, Monday, September 7th is Labor Day and there is no school for students. As we continue into the month of September, I would like to let you know about a few upcoming events and information to be aware of.
Library Books Checkout for Remote Learners
Pick up
Library books will be available for pick-up from Sorrick School Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays outside of Door #11 in a bin marked “PICK UP”.
Please make sure you put the lid securely back on the bin after picking up.
Your child’s name will be on a post-it on his or her book. We will email you and/or your child when the book is ready. The books will be outside of Door #11 in the “PICK UP” bin. Please allow up to 3 days from the time the book was requested until pick up.
Using the Destiny Discover System (link found in Mrs. Hedlund’s Google Classroom or on the NPD website under your child’s school, then Media Center) students will be able to put up to 3 books on hold but will only check one book out at a time. If all 3 of their choices are unavailable, I will select one that is similar to your child’s selected choices. For now all other holds will be deleted each week, and only 1 book will be checked out.
Only 1st grade will check out at this time. We will gradually start to add Kindergarten and Pre-K later in the year.
Return
Books can be returned any time to Door #11 in the bin marked “DROP OFF” located at Door #11.
Please make sure you put the lid securely back on the bin after dropping off.
Please email Mrs. Hedlund lhedlund@npd117.net with any questions.
Parent Liaison for Parents of English Learners
Families are essential in the home-school partnership that is necessary for our students to excel academically and socially. North Palos SD 117 will be beginning a Parent Connections Program for our families of English Learners. A Parent Liaison at Sorrick School will lead this program, supporting parents to get the information and assistance they need to help their children's educational experience. The Parent Liaison will be proactively connecting with families, planning and delivering workshops, and providing parents with resources and support they need. Please welcome Anita Plachczynska, a Kindergarten Polish Bilingual Teacher, as our Sorrick Elementary School Parent Liaison. For more information about this program and services, check out the Parent Liaison Newsletter.
Technology Help Desk
The Technology Department of NPD 117 would like to provide an opportunity to help you and your student with any technology issues that cannot be fixed remotely. We will be hosting appointments at the main entrance (Door #2) of our District Office located at 7825 W. 103rd Street in Palos Hills.
Please click on the following link to sign up for an appointment for us to help you. Thanks!

What is my child learning?
If your child is attending school in person this year, you may have noticed that your child is not coming home with as many paper assignments as expected. Our teachers have been working hard to help both our in-person learners and remote students get familiarized with digital tools, and many assignments are now being completed digitally. To see what your child has been working on, we would encourage you to log into your child's Google account and view their work in Classkick or other platforms that your child's teacher may be using. In the event that our school must return to remote learning, we want our students to be comfortable navigating an online learning environment.
I hope that you all have a restful weekend and enjoy the holiday!
Your partner in education,
Natalie Profita
Principal of Sorrick School

Food Service for Remote Learners
Students attending school remotely may pick up meals via drive-through at Conrady Junior High and will need their school ID or ID number. Meals will not be free to all students as was the case over the summer. Free and reduced-price meals are available to students that qualify.
Meal packets may be picked up between 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays. Two breakfasts and two lunches will be served per packet on Mondays and three of each on Wednesdays. Families are to drive up to the service area located outside the north side of Conrady Junior High. Students are not required to be in the car. Families will remain in their own cars and meals will be brought to you by our staff. Please call 708-233-4514 to speak with Food Services with questions or concerns including the inability to pick up meals at these times.
Frozen items including chicken patties, hamburgers, and chicken nuggets may be served. These items will come frozen, require refrigeration, and will need to be heated, click here for directions.
