Holiday Celebrations around the world

In the library, Ms. Ashley and students are discussing how other places in the world may have other holidays that we don't celebrate. While looking at the globe, they looked at the Netherlands and heard a recording of Swedish children singing, "Santa Lucia" in celebration of the longest day of the year passing. The people of the Netherlands put out porridge with a big pat of butter for their Tomten or Nissa which are little elves that live in the barn or pantry. They help farmers with the animals and are only out at night when everyone is asleep. If you are lucky enough to have a Tomten, you will never see them and their slouchy cap, but you may find their footprints in the snow in the morning.

Using Flipgrid in Writing and Math

Students in Mrs. Peterson's 3rd class have been using Flipgrid in Writing and Math! Flipgrid is a video discussion platform where students record a video post on any topic. Other students in our class can watch, then respond by asking a question, or giving constructive feedback. Last month students celebrated publishing their persuasive speeches, then recorded them using Flipgrid. This week, students explained one strategy they use to solve a multi-digit subtraction problem. This has proven to be a great way to start a discussion!
