Dear UMAC Families,

An email was sent inviting all UMAC families to the volunteer breakfast on Thursday, April 30 at 8:15am in the WC LMC. We'd love to eat breakfast with all our UMAC volunteers and thank you for your hard work throughout the school year. Please let us know if you did not receive the invitation and we will send it to you immediately.

Today, your child is bringing home their second trimester report card. Please take some time to review your child's progress and contact us with any questions or concerns.

Wishing everyone a wonderful, relaxing Spring Break!

Shared Reading

This week in shared reading, students continued learning about the historical event, Pearl Harbor. Our text, Pearl Harbor Child, is written from the perspective of a six-year old child that lived on the Pearl City Peninsula during the attack. From this little girls point-of-view, we learned about December 7, 1941 and the days and weeks that followed. We looked at how this tragic event changed the lives of many Americans in a few short minutes. In groups, students also became an expert on a specific effect of the attack and presented the information to the class. See below for pictures of the planning stage!

Road Trip

Our student tour guides have worked hard this week researching their "state" and putting their notes into a graphic organizer. After break, students will use this organizer to make a presentation about their state. Presentations will be done on the iPad or on a cardboard tri-fold. If your child would like to use a tri-fold, please make sure it is purchased over break. Remember to mark your calendars for our Road Trip on Friday, April 17 at 9:10am!

The old friend math test was pushed back until after break. Students needed a little more practice on their multiplication of mixed number fractions. We will plan to test at the end of the week after Spring Break. Please encourage your mathematician to visit XtraMath or TenMarks (our fun, new website) over break to ensure those math skills stay fresh! I also sent home an extra credit packet as an opportunity for students to receive extra credit for their 3rd trimester math grade!

This week our mathematicians gave their very best effort on the math portion of PARCC. I am so proud of them for their positivity and perseverance during this new experience! In class, they stayed strong and worked hard learning more about fractions, decimals, and percents. We also introduced multiplying decimals! I encourage all students over break to continue their fact practice and utilize XtraMath or TenMarks (new site with practice, games & prizes).
