Laura B. Sprague School Newsletter - February 12, 2021
Black History Month
February is Black History Month and students at Sprague have been participating in many curriculum-aligned activities to learn about the history and accomplishments of black Americans.
Throughout the school year, Sprague students focus on celebrating our diversity, kindness, and making sure all students feel heard and seen. Specifically, during Black History Month, there are a variety of whole-school lessons for all students through music, art, library, extension activities planned through the enrichment specialist and English language teachers. Individual classrooms have availed different read alouds to continue the message of Black History Month. Our lessons focus on social justice, important black scientists, musicians, athletes, and change agents who have made our world a better place. We will have a culminating assembly between Half Day and Sprague to wrap up the month and discuss our learnings and why this is such an important topic to cover.
No School Monday, Feb. 15
There is no school Monday, Feb. 15, due to President's Day. For other changes in the February school day, please review the following calendar updates.
Happy Valentine's Day
The students did a wonderful job showing kindness in their Valentine's Day art project. Please enjoy the video montage of valentine greetings art teacher Allison Smith created to showcase all of the valentines.

Returning to School After Traveling
Traveling for work, pleasure, or family events may create an opportunity to contract COVID-19 and transmit it to others when you return. In order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are asking families who have recently traveled to follow these procedures prior to your child attending school:
Have your child tested for COVID-19 with an RT-PCR test. Tests are widely available through CVS, Walgreens, your personal physician, or a Lake County testing site
Do not send your child to school until you receive a negative result
Share the results with school and your physician
If you or your child exhibit any COVID-19 symptom, please contact your personal physician for further instructions
Reporting Student Absences
Please be aware that because we are in a pandemic, if you call your student in for an absence, we need specific details as to why your child is not attending school. Unfortunately at this time, we can not accept messages that just state that the student will not be in school. If the information is medically sensitive in nature, please contact the school nurse directly. We understand that there are alternative, non-illness related reasons for absences that occur, but because of the current pandemic situation, we need to know that is the case for the absence in order to ensure the continuing health and safety of the students and school staff. Please report absence to 847-945-6686 or Ls_attendance@d103.org.
Students, Track Your Steps
Students are encouraged to track the number of steps they take each day for 30 days in this fun Sprague challenge.
- Starting on Monday, Feb. 8, help your child track their steps daily following these simple directions.
- Record the daily steps on the 30 Day Step Tracker sheet.
- After 30 days, celebrate your child's accomplishment.
- Take a picture of your child walking, running, jumping rope, climbing a snow hill, tracking steps to mvanduch@d103.org or text it to 847-791-3749.
