Counselor Connection
News You Can Use From the Guidance Department
Thank you
Dear Parents,
Thank you for allowing your children to participate in the dress-up days last week. Red Ribbon Week would not have been a success without your encouragement. In grades Pre-K thru 1st, we have been discussing the 5 points of respect (respect your mind and body, be kind to our friends, make good choices, care for others feelings, and show each other we love them). In 2nd and 3rd grades, we have been discussing the book, Charlie and the Curious Club: Candy or Medicine? and identifying safe and unsafe choices. Students in grades 4th thru 6th have been discovering and reviewing healthy choices through playing BINGO. In addition, students in the upper grades have signed or will be signing a Red Ribbon Pledge to promise stay away from drugs and bullying.
On another note...
I have analyzed the needs assessments from you, students, and teachers. The top three workshops you indicated that you would like to attend are: Supporting Students' Academically, Positive Discipline, and Parenting Skills and Strategies. In addition, the top three small groups from which you feel your children would benefit include: friendship, social skills, and building self-esteem. According to the needs assessment results from teachers, students can benefit from the following lessons: managing feelings, self-control, and conflict resolution. Students in 3rd grade indicated they have needs in the following social areas: handling teasing, dealing with anger, and dealing with sadness. Students in 4th grade indicated they have needs in the following social areas: handling teasing, dealing with anger, and feeling stressed. Students in 5th grade indicated they have needs with getting along better with their family members, dealing with anger, and feeling stressed. Students in the 6th grade indicated they have needs with feeling better about themselves, handling peer pressure, and getting along better with their family members. Lastly, students in grades 3rd thru 6th indicated the following academic needs: being more organized, improving study skills. and reducing test nervousness. The results of the needs assessments will assist me with planning large group lessons, small group lessons, and programs for you. Everyone's participation was greatly appreciated.
