Good deeds are coming your way!
Twin Oaks Families:
With Family Conferences and only two days of school this week, students will have some extra time on their hands at home. As we continue to talk about the importance of acting in kind ways, I thought it would be fun to challenge kids to think about doing a service for someone in their home, their neighborhood or their community this week. With that in mind, I put an optional assignment in your child's Friday folder. Be on the look out for good deeds coming your way!
In School This Week: Our counseling lesson for all grades last week gave students an opportunity to generate a list of adjectives about kindness. I asked them to think about kind people they know, and tell me one word to describe them. Even in the primary grades, I was impressed with the lists (see example below). We then watched inspiring videos about kind people who provide service to others in need. One man has been giving free haircuts to unhoused people in his community for over 25 years. We also heard a story about a 9 year old boy who started his own non-profit organization to distribute "Blessing Bags" to people living on the streets in his city. Finally, we brainstormed ways that we might provide service to others right here in our own community. A big part of the lesson was the idea that service means "seeing a need, and filling it," which is quite different from being told to do something. Also, I'm interested in the feelings that are generated when we show kindness to others. I want students to tap into the intrinsic rewards of giving.
