The Winter Horses by Philip Kerr is one of several new additions to the library this school year. It is a historical fiction novel which should appeal to horse lovers and history buffs.

Summary:

It will soon be another cold winter in the Ukraine. But it's 1941, and things are different this year. Max, the devoted caretaker of an animal preserve, must learn to live with the Nazis who have overtaken this precious land. He must also learn to keep secrets--for there is a girl, Kalinka, who is hiding in the park.
Kalinka has lost her home, her family, her belongings--everything but her life. Still, she has gained one small, precious gift: a relationship with the rare wild and wily Przewalski's horses that wander the preserve. Aside from Max, these endangered animals are her only friends--until a Nazi campaign of extermination nearly wipes them out for good.
Now Kalinka must set out on a treacherous journey across the frozen forest to save the only two surviving horses--and herself.


Interesting fact: During WWII, Nazi's believed the Przewalski's horses to be an inferior breed and should be exterminated. By the end of the war, only 31 horses were left. They are still endangered today.

Granger ISD

School – Parent - Student Compact 2019 – 2020

Granger ISD is committed to providing students with the opportunity to build and increase their self-responsibility and self-esteem by recognizing that success is not accidental, but that it comes through planning, determination, and hard work. A school - parent - student compact has been developed that outlines how parents, students, and the entire school staff will share the responsibility for improving student achievement. The Granger ISD compact addresses the school, the parent, and the student with a “promise to action” agreement of specific behaviors that are necessary in order to reach education excellence. Providing students with the opportunity for academic success is a team effort. It takes that commitment of the students, parents, and the school. Please read over the compact with your child and discuss the importance of our commitment together.

Granger ISD Responsibilities

As a school, we will support the learning of every child in the following ways:

  • Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the state’s academic achievement standards.

  • Hold parent-teacher conferences during which the student’s achievement will be discussed.

  • Send reading and math reports demonstrating student progress every six weeks. Students at risk of retention will receive progress monitoring reports every three weeks.

  • Provide parents reasonable access to the staff for consultation.

  • Provide opportunities for parents to be actively involved in the school. Activities include PTO, awards assemblies, student performance programs, volunteering in classroom activities, etc.

  • Provide and communicate a Code of Student Conduct, School Policies and Procedures, and Dress Code Policy to parents and students.

Parent Responsibilities

As a parent, I will support my child’s learning in the following ways:

  • Prepare him/her each day for school by making sure that he/she is neatly groomed, appropriately dressed, and has received a sufficient amount of sleep.

  • Ensure that my child attends school daily, on time, unless there is an excused absence (illness, medical appointment, or legal appointment).

  • Review and sign off on daily homework to make sure that it is complete, neat, and presentable.

  • Volunteer at least 15 hours per year.

  • Participate in decisions relating to my child’s education.

  • Promote positive use of my child’s extracurricular time. Some ideas are: limiting the amount of time spent watching TV, using the computer for educational purposes, visiting the library, museums, and community events, involvement in sports, etc.

  • Read and respond to written and oral communication from the school on a regular basis and parents should check for this communication frequently.

  • Attend all school sponsored activities (i.e., Back to School night, Open House, Parent/Teacher Conferences, etc.).

  • Review with your child the school’s Code of Student Conduct and uphold all school policies and procedures concerning academics, behavior, and dress code.

Student Responsibilities

As a Granger ISD student, I will share the responsibility to improve my academic achievement and achieve the state’s high standards. Specifically, I will:

  • Be prepared for school each and every day. I will maintain a neat and orderly appearance, I will wear appropriate clothes, I will have my homework and school supplies organized, and I will make sure I have had plenty of rest.

  • Attend school, on time, each and every day, unless I have an excused absence (illness, medical appointment, or legal appointment).

  • Complete all classroom and homework assignments on time in a neat and orderly manner. Read every day outside of school time.

  • Give my parents all notices and information sent home from my school every day.

  • Be courteous, kind, and respectful to all.

  • Do my best in everything I do.

  • Comply with all requirements of the school’s Code of Conduct, Dress Code, and Class Rules.

GRANGER ELEMENTARY CAFETERIA EXPECTATIONS

2019 - 2020

Breakfast:

  • Once students are dropped off, they come into the cafeteria, go through the line to get their breakfast tray. Students are to sit at their grade tables (which they will learn the first day/week of school) and stay seated until they are released to go to class.

  • When the bell rings to go to class, everyone stays quietly seated, until their class is called to go to their room. Those still eating need to clean their trays at that time.

  • Toys, spinners, tablets, phones, etc. may not be used in the cafeteria. If in use by students, they will be picked up and given to the student’s teacher.

NEW: Due to privacy-safety laws, parents/visitors will be unable to sit with students in the cafeteria at breakfast due to limited seating space. We encourage parents to say goodbyes to students prior to students entering the cafeteria. All parent visitors who wish to enter the cafeteria at any time must sign in at the front office to get a visitor’s badge.

Lunch:

  • Class comes in and sits at their table until they have permission to get in line.

  • When in line, the student will get their tray, plasticware, and milk. Then they will go to Mrs. Sustaita and tell her their full name. Once Mrs. Sustaita has put them in the computer, the student will go sit down at their class table and start eating their lunch

  • Cafeteria monitors are on duty each day to assist students as needed.

  • At the end of the lunch period, teachers come to the cafeteria to pick up their students to return to class.

Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their child. Parents coming to eat lunch with their child must first stop by the elementary office to get a visitor’s badge (please be prepared to show your driver’s license or another form of ID). There is a separate, designated table for parents to sit with their child (friends of your child are not allowed to sit at the reserved table).

Student Expectations:

  • Stay in seats.

  • Please raise hand if you need anything, have a question, or forgot something from the lunch line.

  • Behave appropriately while eating, using good manners.

  • When the cafeteria lights are turned off, students must stop talking to listen to the cafeteria monitors’ announcements.

  • The lights are used as a way to control the noise level in the cafeteria.

    • Lunch calendars are sent home each month in take-home folders. They are also posted on the Granger ISD website. Please send a lunch with your student on any of the days he/she doesn't like what is on the menu. Students are encouraged to eat their main course first, then sides/snacks/desserts.

    • Students are provided 30 minutes to eat lunch each day.

    • Snacks and extras cannot be charged to the students’ accounts. Students will need money in hand for those purchases.

HIBster

With the recent passage of David’s Law (SB 179) by the Texas Senate in 2017, schools must install a way for students to anonymously report an incident of bullying (including cyberbullying). Granger ISD has chosen to integrate HIBster (harrasment, intimidation & bullying) software to report these incidents if they are happening. Please click on the HIBster icon below, or on school website, to start an incident report or to find out what could constitute a potential bullying or cyberbullying incident.

Granger ISD takes all offenses very seriously.
