District Earns Perfect Score on APR
Lonedell School District has again earned 100% on the Annual Performance Report, part of MSIP 5. MSIP 5 is a tool used by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to measure five standards for Missouri Schools. Academic Achievement, Subgroup Achievement, High School Readiness, Attendance, and Graduation are all measured. Scores in these individual areas contribute to a total that makes up the APR score. The district scored 32 out of 32 points for academic achievement, 10 out 10 for attendance, and 8 out of 8 in sub group achievement. Subgroups include students who receive free and reduced meals, have disabilities, as well as other students.
The administration is very proud of this fourth year achieving 100% APR, however, we don't rely solely on these reports to indicate how we are performing. Mrs. Ulrich reminds us that these scores are just a moment in time, not the end all be all. "While MAP and APR are very important, and we are thrilled with how well our students perform, we know that it is a snapshot in time of their performance on a particular day," says Mrs. Ulrich. "It is used to serve as an accountability measure at the federal level. Our teachers use data from, assessments done in their classroom to really know how a student is doing. Our district uses Evaluate as one of those assessment tools, and our teachers design assessments as well. Based on student performance, our faculty will determine how instruction needs to be adjusted to meet the needs of their classroom. There is much more to each of our students than a single assessment, and we have an amazing staff that adjusts what they do to help them excel each day."
As Mrs. Ulrich stated, Evaluate is a program used in the classroom. Each month throughout the year, students take monthly assessments through Evaluate, which aligns its assessments with the Missouri standards. Data from these assessments is analyzed by team teachers. Students set goals based on their scores, and get very excited as they meet and top those goals. In Mrs. Dunn's Middle School English Language Arts Classes, students can earn bonus points by meeting their goals. "You'd be surprised how excited they get when they see those graphs pointing upward. The bonus points are just an added benefit. The real reward is intrinsic," stated Mrs. Dunn.
We are very proud of our students and staff and the work they put in each day. Our staff members are always striving to better serve the students of our community.

It's Scary Out There, Make Sure Your Kids Are Safe
Many parents are concerned about the recent rash of internet hoaxes that are encouraging children to harm themselves. These hoaxes include the MoMo Challenge and YouTube Kids videos being interrupted by inappropriate content. We want to ensure parents that students are as safe as possible while using the internet at school and remind you of some ways to keep them safe online at home.
For information on best practices and videos to help you understand the dangers, visit our page:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The MoMo Challenge was first recognized in July, 2018. It has recently been a hot topic on social media and local news channels. It is not new and has been addressed by major social media outlets, with dangerous contact being taken down. However, internet searches will lead the user to articles and images about the topic.
Self harm content that is found inserted into what appear to be safe videos for children is addressed in real time by YouTube.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
We provide a high level, tiered internet filter on campus. This filter allows us to block sites, search words, and images that are inappropriate. We monitor student usage in real time both in person and electronically.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
You will find a rash of "safer" programs, browsers, and parent help tools that allow parents to feel more comfortable allowing their students online. Of course, these type of programs have wonderful intentions. In the opinion of internet safety experts, the best way to keep your child safe online is to be aware of what they are doing. Parents can take charge of children's internet usage. Remember, no site is full proof. Monitor your child while using technology, and be involved in their usage.
Speak with your child. If they indicate they have seen things that are frightening, remind them to speak with you immediately. Open communication is the key to keeping them from getting "tricked" into believing these hoaxes.
Should you have questions or concerns, please contact Angela Hill at 636-629-0401 Option 6. Make sure you follow us on Facebook for the most up to date information.
Mrs. Selter Retires
If you have spent any time at Lonedell School, you've probably noticed some of our beautiful artwork, decorated doors, or fantastic graduations. You may have seen a small woman with a large glue gun busily putting final touches on these displays. That would be our amazing Sue Selter. Mrs. Selter has been with the school district for 24 years. She has definitely been known for beautifying our district by anyone who has seen her work. Mrs. Selter is not an art instructor, but a very talented Paraprofessional.
This means she has worked one on one with children of all ages. She has covered middle school study hall classes. She has covered lunch duties. She has assisted teachers in managing their classrooms. She has pretty much done it all.
Mrs. Selter will spend her retirement continuing her art work, traveling to visit her two sons, and hanging out with her husband. She is locally famous for her hand painted Christmas ornaments which are available at The Christmas Haus in Kimmswick, Missouri. When asked what she would do with all of her free time, she answered, "I'll get to spend my son's birthday with him for the first time in years. But mostly, I'll sit back in my recliner and paint," in true Mrs. Selter fashion. We can't imagine a better way for her to share her talents. We will miss you Mrs. Selter!

March Calendar
Students Celebrate Read Across America
Two decades ago, educators got together to form a celebration of reading. This made perfect sense. We get kids excited about sporting events, fundraising, and performances, why not get them just as excited about reading? Who better to frame this celebration around than beloved children's book author, Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly known as Dr. Seuss. So began the first Read Across America celebration.
Twenty years later, students in schools throughout America celebrate the love of reading around March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday. Our students are no exception. We hosted various dress up days, had themed lessons, and even some special guest readers. But the fun doesn't have to end there. Reading just 20 minutes each day is proven to improve critical thinking, prevent cognitive decay, and increase empathy and emotional intelligence. These are just some of the benefits. If you can spare 20 minutes, cuddle with your child and pick up a good book. It's 20 minutes you will never regret.
Go Fund Me Set Up for Bobcats Closet
You may recall that last year volunteer Brandy Braun along with several others spearheaded the Bobcat Closet before school began. This provided the opportunity for students in need to shop for donated clothing, shoes, school supplies, personal items and hygiene products. We now plan to open that closet each day, but we need your help. Click on this link to visit Mrs. Braun's Go Fund Me page to see how you can help us provide for this worthy cause.
