Semester Exam Exemptions
- Exemption forms may be picked up from a student's House Office beginning Wednesday, December 7th.
- Exemption forms are due back to the House Office by 4:15 p.m. on Friday, December 9th.
- Students will not be allowed out of class to get an exemption form.
- Each grade level will have a different color form that has the maximum amount of exemptions possible for each grade level: 9th = 1; 10th = 2; 11th = 3; 12th = 4.
- Students must have an 80 or above for the semester average AND no more than 2 absences (All Excused (A) & Unexcused (U) absences count. (D12=UIL, T=Tardy, M33= College Visit, M20= Religious D10=Field Trip do not count against their exemptions). If a student has been in ISS, Suspended, or DAEP (RightTurn), even 1 day, they are not eligible for exemptions (Those are identified at “I”, “S”, “Y”, and “R”).
- Exemption forms must include a teacher signature that verifies the student has 2 or fewer absences and has a semester average of 80 or higher. Students are encouraged to get teacher signatures early! No one but the teacher of record can sign for a specific class,
- Exemption forms must also include a parent signature (regardless of the student's age) that acknowledges the exemption and that the student must be present the day of the exam.
- Students are required to attend classes in which they are exempt on examination days. An exemption is an exam exemption and not an attendance exemption. If a student is absent on exam day, that absence DOES count against exemptions.
- If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Woodworth in the Academic Office.

I’m So Stressed!!!
Exams, practices, projects, friends, work…these are just a few of the things that can lead to stress in our student’s lives. Sometimes, they are able to handle/juggle the demands of life okay but other times, they struggle. It’s important for us all to monitor our students and watch for any major changes that may happen, i.e., change in sleep patterns, sudden change in mood, not eating or eating too much. If you notice some of these changes, one of the greatest things you can do as a parent is talk to them. We all know teens don’t like talking to their parents, but this is a time where you need to make it happen. Don’t let them get by with one word answers, look for patterns. Of course, you can also give your student’s counselor a call or a teacher to see what changes have been seen at school.
Some helpful things to do when stressors start:
· Get a good night’s sleep.
· Eat breakfast
· Use a planner or calendar on your phone
· Find something that is calming and do it. Listen to music, use stress balls, draw or paint.
· Go for a walk or exercise.
If you find that these things don’t help or your student is still “stressing out”, don’t hesitate to let your student’s counselor know or contact your student’s physician. They have resources and information that may help.

AVID Staff Spotlight
Peter Morton teaches Sophomore and Junior English here at BHS. Mr. Morton attended college at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas at El Paso. He obtained a Bachelors of Arts degree with a major in English. When asked, “What activities were you involved with while in college?” Morton said, “Not much… I worked a job to help pay for school.” One of his favorite college memories was attending Austin’s live music venues. He said, “You could see a band any night of the week! And Austin was much smaller back then”. When asked, “What skills did you learn in college that you have applied to your personal and professional life?” Morton said, “I learned to really study. High school was too easy, and I wasn't ready for college.” When asked, “What advice would you offer to students who are looking to pursue an education after high school?” Mr. Morton replied, “Hard work beats everything, even genius!”
Optimist Club Essay Contest
Motivate ‘em now . . . they’ll apply the rules on the run!
