Senpai finishes in top 8 at the Dutch Open!
We would like to recognize Senpai Scott for placing 7th at the Karate1 Premier League Dutch Open held March 16-18. After a close match against Iran, Senpai battled his way through repecharge, beating both Slovakia and Uzbekistan. He then took on France's Logan DaCosta, a fierce rematch reminiscent of the previous year when both contenders fought in finals at the same event. Unfortunately, France slipped past Senpai to ultimately win the bronze medal. Mr. Christian Wever also attended, and put on a strong showing against Portugal. Congratulations to both these athletes!
Qualified!
Mr. Christian Wever traveled to Columbia to compete at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. He did more than win - he dominated his division, winning 8-0 in most bouts - and qualified for the 2018 Central American & Caribbean Games, which can lead to qualification for the 2019 Pan-American Games! We are so proud of his commitment as an international competitor and a representative of the Academy of Classical Karate.
Highlight on...
The Academy of Classical Karate features students and instructors to highlight the diverse background of our members within the dojo community.
This month's highlight karateka is Grayson M., who originally started his karate training with WIKF South Carolina, but now is a regular student at the McKinney Dojo. He is an avid competitor, and recently our 2017 Junshidoshi (assistant instructor) of the Year award.
Tell us a little about yourself. What do you do when you aren't at the dojo?
I am 10 years old. and am finishing the 5th grade. My family consists of me, my Dad, my Mom and my dog Dug. I moved to Dallas from South Carolina in 2015. I don't really do much (I am at the dojo 5 days a week), but when I get some free time I enjoying playing and shooting hoops. I have recently started practicing archery and enjoy that. I also will play with my dog Dug and take him on walks.
How long have you been doing karate?
I am going on my sixth year of karate, and my 5th year of competition karate. When I was in South Carolina I practiced karate at Carolina Karate under Sensei Tommy Hood.
What do you like about ACKD?
I like how if you are new, everyone wants to help you. They introduce you to new people, and make you feel like apart of a big family. It was easy for me to feel like a part of the dojo after moving here.
What has surprised you the most from doing karate?
I have been surprised how committed people are to karate, including myself. I'm surrounded by hard working teachers and students, and it makes me want to train more.
Describe a memorable experience in your time at the dojo.
I'm a part of the dojo's competition team, WIKF Texas. I have competed for a couple years and have lots of great memories, but I will always remember the first time I was appointed Team Captain for the junior team. It was at the team meeting in 2016, and they were going to appoint a new Team Captain. Before the coaches announced who it was I thought it was going to be my friend Luis Rovelo, but when they said my name I was in shock! I am thankful that I was picked, and do my best to support the team.
What would you recommend for someone who wants to start karate?
I would recommend to always do your best, and push yourself to be better. Work hard. Definitely that. Most of all, always try and have a little fun.
