Report Cards
Lotería
7th grade students are reading a novel in Language Arts class called Summer of the Mariposas. Some of the 8th grade students are reading the book in their Expository Reading & Writing class. The title of each chapter is a card on a Lotería board (like Bingo), and the game is referenced in the book. This week we will play the game Lotería so that students who are unfamiliar with the game gain some background knowledge. I also thought it would be something fun to do as well.
I wanted to give parents a heads up because two of the squares on the board might bring up so discussion: El Negrito and El Borracho (The Drunk). We will turn these into an educational lesson about what the 1930’s were like when this game was created and this will be a good segue to some upcoming lessons I will tell you more about next week that we are planning to complete in Social Studies classes about inappropriate slang words the students use casually, tolerance, etc.

Save The Dates
There are several dates coming up in March, April, and May to mark on your calendar that you may or may not know about. There will be more details to come on all of the night events as we get closer to them.
March 11-15, 1:30 pm: Minimum Day Dismissal. Conferences all week. See details below.
Tuesday, March 26, 7:15 am: Trimester 2 Honor Roll Breakfast.
Thursday, March 28, 7 pm: We will be showing the movie Angst and have a panel discussion with high school students and experts after. We are finding that a lot of kids have anxiety and depression and feel that it is important to address this topic. Students will also see the movie that day during school and be able to ask questions to a panel.
Friday, March 29: Super Minimum Day. Dismissal at 12:06 pm.
Monday, April 1- Friday, April 5: Spring Break. No School.
Thursday, April 11, 6-7:30 pm: Open House/STEAM Fair.
Thursday, April 25, 7 pm: Spring Concert.
Thursday, May 2, 7 pm: Vaping/Juul Parent Information Night. Sequoia Union High School District is doing this same evening in April. I asked the organizer to bring this presentation to RCSD because there is a huge increasing trend nationwide of middle school and high school students vaping. Kennedy will host because I organized this, but we will open this up to all parents in the District. (Same thing with Angst in March).
