What's Happening?
Report Cards
Please make it a point to view your child's report card starting on December 11th. I am excited to begin our second term together! Second term is a time for us to start really pushing ourselves! The children have had several months to learn class and schoolwork expectations as well as behavioral expectations and I am looking forward to seeing tremendous growth in this second term.
Life Gets Busy.....Make Time To READ!
Last week I visited a fifth grade classroom in Marshfield to see their weekly, "Book Buzz". I loved seeing how engaged the students, and perhaps more importantly, the adults in the room were while reading their books. Modeling a love for reading and modeling that reading is worthwhile and important is the greatest gift we can give our children. During these busy holiday months, please remember to take the time to read, and make sure your child catches you doing it:)
The Language of Math
Please try to use the correct vocabulary when discussing math. I am so impressed with the students' use of math terms so far this year! Let's keep pushing them to use the correct terms when doing homework too!
Division As Repeated Subtraction
Why didn't anyone tell me this when I was first learning division? Nowadays the children learn so much more than we did at their age! It's not enough to know "how" to do a problem, we need to understand, "why" it works!
Division as Sharing
Children get scared when they hear, "division" but they have been sharing since before they could talk (maybe not equally though). Help alleviate any stress that comes with division but reminding them that division is just another form of "sharing".
