JACKIE ROBINSON
a life of breaking color barriers
Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo Georgia. He had 4 brothers and sisters Mack, Willa may, Frank, Wania. His father left his mom at a young age, with only a small amount of money. His family moved to California in 1920. When he was in high school he was a sports superstar. He played multiple sports, and he was great at all of them. Jackie attended UCLA for college and met his wife Rachel there. Rachel and Jackie had three children David, Jackie jr, Sharon. In 1942 he went to the army, even though there were not many black men enlisted in the army. In World War II he fought on the battlefield he was in the army for 2 years he was discharged for not moving to the back of the bus. when the driver said he had to. On November 18th he had his first son. Sadly his son was killed in a car accident. His baseball career began in the Negro Leagues he played in 1945 to 1947 he played for the monarchs. When he got into the MLB pitchers would throw at him and say mean things. His team would refuse to play they even signed this thing about him being off the team. He retired at the age 37 and he played for 12 years total. Ten in the magers two in the negro league After playing baseball he devoted his time to the Civil Rights Movement with many other people. Sadly he passed away in October 24 1972 from a heart attack.
Jackie is known for a lot of achievements these are some of them. At the time he played baseball, Branch Rickey was the owner of the Dodgers. He saw many talented players, but he sighed Jackie. In 1947 Jackie went to the Dodgers for his first MLB season. He changed baseball forever by letting black people play baseball. On April 15, 1947 Jackie played his first MLB game and hit his first homerun. He hit 12 homeruns in his first season He won Rookie of the Year, MVP, and many others awards throughout his career. The Dodgers won six National Pennants when Jackie was playing. His number 42 was retired for the whole MLB, and it now is posted at every stadium in the league! Jackie was the only person that has ever had that done. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame on June 23, 1962.
These are some of Jakie character traits Jackie was a very brave man he was threatened to be killed because of his skin color he also players would throw the ball at him and step on him, but he never backed out. He was a very kind person too. He helped people with things. For example, he helped his mom by trying to make money for her. He was a very talented person he stole bases and was a powerful hitter He was a all round great player at every position .
