Burr and Burton Academy's Library
2019-2020
Welcome & Overview
Happy summer!! This document provides information about the space and services that we provide in the library. I hope new and returning faculty find it useful.
Most importantly, I would like to highlight my desire to collaborate with you and assist you. I am happy to host classes in the library or come to your classroom to work with your students. Some ideas for collaboration: teaching or support of research skills, book talking for students' independent book selection, creating a research guide for a specific topic, and assisting with the selection and support of apps for presentation of student learning. These are just examples, the sky’s the limit. Please contact me with even a vague idea of a project and we can meet to brainstorm.
Collaboration Ideas
Book Bento
Students create a beautiful arrangement of artifacts that relate to the book they have read. The image can be imported into Thinglink, a platform that allows hyperlinks of text, images, video, etc. to be linked to the image, and add explanation or meaning to the objects The final product can be posted to Instagram for real-life presentation/performance. Check out examples here.
Breakout Experience
Similar to an escape room activity, a breakout box can be designed for any subject. Instead of breaking out of a room, students are using clues to figure out the codes to unlock locks and “break into” the box. Students engage in teamwork and develop problem-solving skills while demonstrating their learning.
Netflix Series, Book Trailer or Book Review
Students share their love or criticism of a book with others. For example, they create a Netflix series based on the book they read or a book trailer (like a movie trailer). Book reviews can be posted to our online library catalog or posted in the hallways.
BBA: A Reading Community
Food for Thought
We have a wonderful program at BBA called "Food for Thought." Students and faculty create their own book groups and the school purchases copies of the books for participants and pays for a meal during their book discussion. Groups can be initiated by students or teachers. A group must consist of at least three students and one faculty member. Faculty-only groups are also possible. The book can be anything that interests the group, for example, a deeper examination of a subject touched on in class, a shared hobby, or simply entertainment. To qualify for the “Food for Thought” program the book must be completely optional; it cannot be a class requirement. “Food for Thought” is a great opportunity to connect with students in a different setting and nurture a love of reading.
You all have a library card
We are ready for you to check out books now. Stop by to browse or search our catalog online. We are always interested in suggestions for additions to our collection.

Free Book Displays
You will notice some free book displays around campus and in the library. Please feel free to add to these shelves or help yourself to the offerings. If you have an idea for a location that could benefit from one of these displays, please let me know.
Reserving the Hunter Seminar Room and Library Spaces
The Hunter Seminar Room (HSR) and the library are shared spaces for the entire Burr and Burton Community to use. Small groups are always welcome in the library. In order to ensure that the space is not crowded, if you plan to bring a class to the library or would like to use the Hunter Seminary Room, we ask that you reserve it in advance. There is often last minute availability, so should a sudden need pop up, of course please call or email, but it is best to reserve in advance. You may see the current availability of the spaces by looking at the Google calendars for HSR or Library
To reserve times during the school day or for morning meetings, please contact Margi Putney. To reserve times after school, evenings and weekends please contact Franci Carieri.
Physical Resources
The Lisa B. Tuttle Library is a beautiful space open to all faculty and students before and after school in additional to regular school hours. The library has a collection of over 10,000 print and digital items. In addition to our own collection, we belong to the Northshire Consortium and share resources with Manchester Elementary Middle School and Manchester Community Library, which brings our total local collection to over 50,000 items. Our goal is to provide materials to enrich the curriculum as well as your personal interests. If we don’t have a book that you are looking for locally, we will request an interlibrary loan through the Vermont Department of Libraries system which contacts public, school and university libraries or we will purchase it for the collection. Here is the link to the online catalog. Please email me with any book requests.
