Technology Device Care

Are you taking care of your device?

For School Year 2020-2021, the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education decided to remove the annual student device technology fee for take home devices (see BOE policy JS-E-4). Historically, this fee has helped to sustain devices (iPads, laptops, Chromebooks) that need repair due to normal “wear and tear” in the lifespan of the device. That said, the policy does explicitly lay out that the fee is not to be used towards devices that are lost, stolen, misused, or abused. Every parent/guardian has signed, in agreement that they will pay in instances of abuse, misuse, or neglect.

Examples laid out in these policies include, but are not limited to:

• Dropping, throwing, bumping or treatment in a manner that causes damage.

• Dismantling device

• Exposing device to prolonged extreme temperature

• Exposing device to liquid

• Leaving items on keyboard when closing device

• Not ensuring device is secure from theft at all times including leaving device in a vehicle or unsecured in a school or home setting.

In these situations, the family is liable for the damage caused and will pay the cost of repair directly to the schools. Once full extent of repair is evaluated by District 11’s Technical and Support Services Department, a final cost will be sent to the school, to pass on to the family. A loaner device will be given to the student during the time the device is being repaired. To review the student agreement that parents/guardian signed, find the attachments below.

If something happens to your device or you have questions, please call our main office at 719-328-7100.

Thank you,

Ms. Taylor
