Ross Round Up
Engage. Empower. Educate. Every Day.
September 30, 2022
Thanks to all those who came to the Parent Advisory Committee yesterday--it was great to spend time with you, talk about what's working well at Ross, and talk about what needs some attention.
We're excited for these upcoming events that Ross, the Parent Advisory Committee, and the Indian Creek/Ross PTA are planning:
- October 13 from 11:00-12:30pm is our PTA Jog-a-Thon. We have some amazing prizes planned for kids (including a silly string fight with the principal) and it should be great fun! Fliers will be coming home TODAY.
- October 14 during recess will be our first Monthly Popcorn Fridays. Popcorn costs $0.25 a bag (limit of two bags per kid). To volunteer, click this link. Big thanks for KJs and Parent Advisory Committee parents who are donating popcorn, oil, and bags and letting us use their popcorn machine. We are blessed with amazing parents!
- October 19-21 are Parent-Teacher Conference days. Teachers will be reaching out soon to schedule conferences with you. All three days are early release days at 1:30 so that we can start conferences at 2:00 each day. Our goal is to meet with every family and share what we're doing with our AVID program at Ross.
During conferences, you'll learn more about our AVID program at Ross.
- Did you know that Ross is the AVID flagship school for Kuna School District? We started using AVID strategies 4 years ago. In that time, our student achievement has increased substantially. Last year, 100% of our students grew in school Reading measures.
- What is AVID? AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, which means that we design everything we do on campus to help students learn about what they want to be in the future and prepare them for it.
- What does AVID look like at school? AVID helps kids learn critical school skills like Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) so that they can be successful in their future lives. Each student has an AVID binder to help them keep their work organized, which will help them in middle school when they have multiple classes and teachers. Each student keeps an orderly desk and cleans it regularly so they can find materials. We teach students how to take clear notes in a variety of different styles. We focus on collaborative discussions and activities, like Philosophical Chairs (check out this YouTube for an example in Mrs. Sweet's class) and collaborative projects both in and out of class (check out this student-led example at recess).
- What other schools in Kuna are focusing on AVID? Because of the amazing student growth at Ross, many other schools in the district are now adding AVID to their sites. For example, all elementary schools this year are starting to incorporate AVID strategies. Middle Schools are starting this work as well.
We're so proud of our program here at Ross, and we're excited to share it with you at Parent-Teacher Conferences. We love our kids, and we're grateful to you for sharing them with us!
With love,
Principal Tripp
