PSAT
What is the PSAT?
The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT. The SAT is a standardized test used by colleges to make admissions decisions. For the College Board's explanation of the PSAT and additional information, please click here: https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/media/pdf/psat-nmsqt-student-guide.pdf
FHS has 10th and 11th graders take the PSAT exam in school in October, so you/your student will take the exam in October 2022.
The P stands for practice and is a way for students to gauge what accommodations they might want to apply for when taking the actual SAT. It is also important to remember that no colleges will see the PSAT results. Most students just go into it with the mindset that this is their first experience at this type of test, try their best, and use it as an opportunity to learn more about taking this type of test.
Accommodations for the PSAT
If your child has a disability you may be wondering about accommodations provided during the upcoming PSAT exam. Any accommodations for the PSAT test need to be applied for and approved directly by the College Board. The process is separate from any state testing accommodations (i.e. MCAS) and the IEP/504 processes.
We encourage all students to attempt their first PSAT without accommodations. This gives a student a gauge of what accommodations they want to apply for in anticipation of future PSATs or SATs. For example, many students who are eligible for extra time on SATs don't use it because they are required to use the entire time period for each section and cannot go on to the next section even if they are ready. Many students find this stressful and decide to not apply for that accommodation unless they felt they truly would have liked the extra time during the practice.
After students take the practice, they can have a conversation with their school counselor about applying for accommodations with the College Board. Once accommodations are approved they can be used for any College Board testing going forward - PSAT, SAT, and AP exams.
Visit the College Board’s Accommodations on College Board Exams website for more information, including descriptions of frequently requested accommodations.
This must be signed by a parent/guardian for FHS to apply for SAT and PSAT accommodations on a student's behalf. This gets returned to your student's counselor.
It can take up to 7 weeks for College Board to process accommodations applications. It is important to apply early. For the October 2022 PSAT, this means before the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
