Are you new to our school? If you haven’t already, please feel free to attend a New Parent Coffee with our Principal, Ivy Goggins. She will share information about our school and provide a tour if you’d like. The next New Parent Coffee will be at 7:40 on Friday, November 4th in the Media Center. Welcome to DSES and we hope to see you there.
Survey
Every year, the state rates schools based on several data points. One of these data points is a survey that all staff, students, and parents complete about our school. You may complete the survey using your personal computer, smartphone or tablet. If you do not have access to the Internet, you are welcome to take the survey at DSES. We encourage all parents to take the survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. No parent participation or low parent participation will negatively impact our school's School Climate Star Rating from the state. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Results from the survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online. We greatly appreciate your time and effort!

http://apps.gadoe.org/schoolclimate/parents.nsf/Survey.xsp
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 take their portion of the survey at school and it is called the Georgia Student Health Survey 2.0. Federal law requires that the student survey questions be made available for review by all interested parties. Parents can opt out of the survey for their student. If you do not want your child to take the survey, please send a hand written and signed note to your child's teacher by Friday, November 11th. If you do not respond by this date, we will assume that your child can take the survey. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will take the survey at some point between November 14th -November 17th .

Project Based Learning Showcase Night
Project Based Learning Showcase Night is scheduled for November 10th from 5:30-7:00. Plan on attending and see all the great work the students have been doing for their projects! By visiting other classes, you can get a glimpse as to what your child may be learning in the years to come. This year we will again have the question cards so that parents can ask those deep meaningful questions of all our Dunwoody Springs students. The children have learned so much about pollution, animal habitats, Native American Tribes, bug eradication, and oh so much more! We hope everyone can come and see the growth of our Project Based Learning initiative here at DSES!!
TAG Corner – Talented and Gifted Activities
“The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”
-Albert Einstein
Imaginative thought allows us to process problems in our minds. We can play with possible consequences, scenarios, and reactions before those things become reality. It is significant in cognitive development and problem solving.
One of the greatest ways to get imaginative juices flowing is through free-play. This is best demonstrated in preschool classes where children are allowed to explore and play with objects and concepts. But even older children and adults use imagination to form ideas in their mind. By encouraging imagination and visualization during the learning process, you are creating a springboard for creative thought.
How do we encourage and develop imaginative thinking in our children?
Encourage ingenious humor. Humor helps kids take joy in their creative intelligence. Laugh together often, and don’t be shy about saying: “You tickled my funny bone with that one!”
Facilitate play; don’t dictate it. Kids get a big boost from parents’ getting on the floor and really playing with them. During play follow your child’s lead. Play should be a dance between you, not a concert with you as sole conductor.
Play games that could have different answers. Include “What if” questions in play. “What if we want to build a sand castle? How can me make the sand stick together better?” “What if we made designs on our castle, what could we use to make them?”
Play imaginative word games. For instance, devise ways to build a house if you landed on the moon. Or make lists of all the different and imaginative ways you could use a simple household item, like a leaf rake or a hand mixer. Enjoy wacky answers!
Play make-believe games. You know, pretend that you’re a monkey. Or pretend to be machines like lawn mowers, popcorn poppers, or leaf blowers!

Food Drive
The North Springs Neighborhood Schools are working together to support the Community Assistance Center (CAC) of Sandy Springs.
This local agency provides support to all of our families in need. They offer financial assistance, a food pantry, adult education and more.
We reached out to them and plan to support their upcoming FOOD DRIVE. They are most in need of cereal and soup at this time.
All 6 schools are committed to supporting them so that none of our children go without food. Our newly formed DSES Student Council agreed to manage the food drive so please bring in SOUP and CEREAL so that DSES steps up for our community. (Publix regularly runs BOGO on cereal J) We will collect these items from Oct. 31st – November 11th.
