Character Analysis
Doctor Manette is Lucy Manette's father. He was put in jail, and served eighteen years in a prison in the Bastille. He was known as the shoemaker, because while he was in prison, shoe making passed the time for him. It allowed him to get his mind off of the prison and his situation. His characterization completely changed throughout the novel. A depressed man who made shoes for a hobby because he had been in jail for 18 years transformed into a prosperous and loving guy by the end of the novel.
