Holiday reflections
Only one day remains before we break for our traditional December vacation. Anyone who has been teaching even a short time can tell you that it’s not ironic that today is also the longest day of the year. Tomorrow’s school day will be filled with well-wishes, wrapping paper, and a festive frame of mind to celebrate the season.
The best presents I received this year preceded our break. Last week I bore witness to students in our ARCH Program in maroon gowns with gold stoles signing holiday songs as part of the Case High Chorus. This simple act reflects not only a modeled culture of kindness, but an embracing of inclusion in the community. How proud I am of all stakeholders in this event.
My second gift was a Christmas card generated on a computer from a student who does not speak. Daily he communicates through an app on an iPad to his classmates and teachers. Today, he gave me the greatest gift: symbols reflecting words of gratitude that our most simple acts of recognition and kindness do not go unnoticed by anyone, whether we are loud, quite, or even silent.
We have the power to make or break a person each day. Let us use our power wisely and recommit to kindness to 2016. This would be the greatest gift we could give each other.
Even better than Christmas 1971 (below) when Santa brought three McCann children the brand new Milton Bradley game Voice of the Mummy. Anyone else remember this?
The joy of the season and a Happy New Year to you and yours,
Brian
