From Mr. Clemente

Dear Winter Park Band families,

What a great week of performances to wrap up this semester!

Congratulations to ALL our Band students on their performances on Thursday night's Winter Band Concert. The concert bands and jazz ensembles now turn their attention to preparing their next performances at District MPA in February (Jazz) or March (Concert).

I'm so proud of all of our students for their work this fall semester. It was no small task to put everything together from the beginning of marching band camp in July until the culmination of the Winter Concert cycle this past week, and our students have been outstanding. The musicianship the exhibit each day during rehearsals in class, their work to go above and beyond auditioning for All-State and All--County, their friendliness towards each other, and countless other small, everyday moments are what make the Winter Park Band such a great place to be!

Thank you so much to our Band parents and extended families for their support in attending our concerts and allowing our ensembles to feel the appreciation for their hours of hard work and preparation for our performances. I know the students deeply appreciate your applause and congratulations! A special thank you to all the parents who lead the decorating and setup and teardown of our cookie reception after the concert - Dana Adkinson, Ellen DeLoach, Robyn Fodor, Andrea Rediske and Heather Ribaric

Park Philharmonic will have Winterfest Dress Rehearsal this Monday, 12/12 and the Winterfest performance on Tuesday, 12/13. Parents - don't forget your tickets to Winterfest!

The Pep Band will entertain the audience and provide the atmosphere for Thursday's Cure Classic All-Star Game at Showalter Field. All those students who have signed up to perform - please see the Itinerary attached to this Newsletter.

Moving into Winter Break, all our students should make plans to bring their instruments and music folders home for the extended break. We will be playing in class all five days this week, so instruments must go home after school on Friday, 12/16. Students have lots of music to be looking at and preparing for the Spring semester, including Solo & Ensemble MPA pieces, Concert MPA repertoire, and Jazz MPA repertoire. Our ensembles will benefit from that practice time students are able to carve out of break whenever they are able. A rising tide raises all boats!

I sincerely wish all our Band families a restful, relaxing, and well-deserved Winter Break. From hurricanes moving our schedule around to just getting back to another year of school events and activities, I know we are all looking forward to some time off campus. Have a great last week of the semester, and a wonderful break! Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to all. I look forward to seeing everyone again in January!

Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson

Great concert last week, Band Kids and Directors! And that Guest Conductor! That apple doesn’t fall far from that tree! ;)

Thank you, parents, for bringing cookies and yummy things for the post-concert reception. So fun to restart that holiday band tradition! And extra thanks to the trusty reception set up crew: Ellen DeLoach, Robyn Fodor, Andrea Rediske and Heather Ribaric .. what a warm holiday atmosphere and event after listening to such beautiful music!

As we wrap up the calendar year, a couple things to leave you awesome people with:

  • We still need three chaperones for what will REALLY (I promise, this time!) be the year’s last bout of stand tunes for a special event All-Star game at Showalter on Thursday evening, December 15th. Please sign up to chaperone just ONE. MORE. TIME .. here:

  • Now begins the crunch to prep for Door-to-Door, the year’s biggest fundraiser for the band! Please see Heather Ribaric’s message in this newsletter for specific info on that. We do need 22 (yes, 22!) more volunteers for our February 4th day of door to door-ing. Even if your child insists that you don’t enter his or her world, this is the ONE time to ignore that plea. The success of our Door to Door fundraiser is directly proportionate to the number of bodies that work that fundraiser on that day .. the more feet we have walking door to door (driven in cars by fabulous parents!), the greater the funds raised. You just have to drive a car full of sweet band kids around .. super easy! Contact Heather to submit copies of your driver’s license and car insurance info and with any questions (

  • And lastly, if you have contacts with large-scale donors, corporations or foundations that may be able to assist with underwriting even a small portion of our Carnegie Hall trip, please contact Heather Ribaric, me or the directors with that information.

Thank you again, parents, for your continued support of the band program and a huge thanks to those who were able to contribute the directors’ holiday gifts. What a great way to wrap up the year! Happy holidays to all and enjoy your well-deserved time off .. see you next year!

  • If you turned in a paper order form, you will get it back at pickup.

Shout out to our top 3 sellers... Julianna Lugo with 77, Taylor RIbaric with 51 and Keirren Lawson with 28. They earned lots of credit towards their New York trip!

See you Wednesday!

As I mentioned at the concert, we are stepping up our efforts to secure large donations from area businesses, corporations or foundations to help with the overall cost for all traveling to New York. If you have a contact at any of these organizations, please let me know so I can reach out to them and see if they are able to help. You can email me at Let's get the Cats to Carnegie Hall!

Fundraising Chair

Door 2 Door - our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year is coming Saturday, February 4th, and the day will arrive faster than we’d all like to think! To make this fundraiser possible, we need parent drivers!

How does it work?

Each parent is given a carefully crafted map to drive, based on previous years results. We try to keep you close to your home, if possible. Each driver takes 4 kiddos in their uniforms to walk the part of the neighborhood on your map and collect money door-to-door. The students split up into groups of two and each group takes a side of the street. You are able to stay in your car and move along with them or get out and walk. You and your group return for lunch and to change groups with a new map for the afternoon.

This is a tradition for the Sound of the Wildcats and many neighbors expect our arrival, as we do it the same Saturday every year. We also have special permission from the City of Winter Park, so our kids are safe.

For all students, the fundraiser puts money directly into their band accounts! For any parents that sign up to drive, your child will receive an additional portion of the proceeds that will go directly into their account.

What you need to do:

For every driver that signs up I need 3 things:
1. Copy of driver's license
2. Copy of insurance card that will be valid at time of D2D. If it’s renewing between now and February, wait to send me the updated info, but send me an email letting me know that.
3. A screenshot of your active/approved Additions status.

It may seem like there’s plenty of time, but I need to have this information collected over Winter Break and we will all be so busy with the holidays, it’s helpful if you can sign up now and send me the info as soon as possible. Heather Ribaric, our map organizer extraordinaire, will begin doing her magic with all those maps by the first week of January.

The links for Additions and Sign-up Genius are below:

Here is the link for Additions approval:

Here is the Sign-Up Genius Link:

If you're signed up on Additions, but not finding that Additions page you need for your screenshot, here is the link and instructions to find your status:

1. sign in (yep- you've got to remember that login info!)

2. If you do this on your computer, your picture and active status will pop right up. Take a picture and send that to me.

3. If you do this on your phone: once you sign In, it will say, "Welcome (your name)", scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "more" and click on that. The next screen should show your picture and say "active". That's the page I need a screenshot of.

And I also need the driver's license and insurance card showing a date that's valid at the time of D2D in February

Remember, please only sign up if you are able to drive, however, we certainly understand sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances. We will be driving four kids for each car.

Please note that the sign ups are from 8-5. The sign ups are created like that because accommodating 1/2 day is very challenging to schedule. If you are unable to do all day, but can do 1/2 day, please let us know. We will put you on hold and see what our need is closer to February.

Warm regards,

Robyn Fodor

SOLO & ENSEMBLE MPA - Moving Into Winter Break

Students now have selected their pieces, formed their ensembles, and should be setting about preparing for February's performance at Solo & Ensemble. If a student chooses to play a solo, they are responsible for providing a piano accompanist. If you are in search of an accompanist, please consult this list of piano accompanists on the Band website. Students should have their accompanist THIS WEEK before we leave for Winter Break.

Music students have ordered should begin to arrive at school and will be passed out to the students as soon as possible. So long as nothing is backordered, all students should have their music before leaving for Winter Break.

Winter Break time is great for short, focused bursts of practicing in between long spells of relaxation. Watching some Netflix? Take 5 minutes between episodes and learn or work on 4-8 measures. Watching college football bowl games? Practice during the commercial breaks. Company over and you can’t play loud? Silent practice can be just as effective as playing full. Practice your breathing spots along with fingerings with a metronome and headphones. This will pay huge dividends in your preparation of your piece.

Band students have two performance options to complete the Solo and Ensemble project:

  • Option 1: Solo and Ensemble MPA. Solo and Ensemble MPA takes place each year at the beginning of February and is hosted by a school in our district, this year Horizon HS on February 10 and 11. This event is put on by the Florida Bandmasters Association(FBA), and allows students to perform for an adjudicator for a rating. Adjudicators for this event are professors, teachers, and performers from across the state of Florida, and students have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performance from someone who is an expert on their instrument. Students perform either a solo or chamber ensemble piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and may perform in up to 4 different events. The Band program pays for the event registration for all participating students.

  • Option 2: Solo and Ensemble Recital Option. For students who choose not to perform at the Solo and Ensemble MPA put on by FBA, those students will perform as part of our Solo and Ensemble Recital at school. This year, that recital will take place in the Band Room on Wednesday, February 5, beginning at 1:30 PM. Students must select a piece from the FBA Solo and Ensemble Required Music List, and the performances will be adjudicated by both Mr. Smith and Mr. Clemente. Ms. Young would adjudicate color guard solos.
