April 2013

April is School Library Month!

School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) celebration of school librarians and their programs. What do you LOVE most about your library media center at LMES? Drop a note into the puppy paw canister on the library checkout desk throughout the month of April. If Mrs. Matney picks your response, you can be a guest on the morning news show and get a surprise!

Blowfish Reading Rewards Program

The Blowfish Reading Rewards Program kicks off April 11th and runs through May 9th. Students are eligible to read books of their choosing and earn tickets to the June 6th Columbia Blowfish home game. Students log up to 4 books on their Blowfish bookmark. A “home run” of 4 books = 4 tickets to the June 6th baseball game plus participation in the pre-game parade & a free hot dog and soda.

E-books to read online

Join the We Give Books site to help LMES earn free books. Simply create a free account and select our school from the list of options. Each time you are logged in and read a book, our school earns credit for free books as part of the Read for My School promotion lasting through April 5th. You'll find popular books for ages 0-10 covering different genres.

Library Catalog Search Tips

Did you know that you can search the library catalog from your classroom or at home, filter results by reading level, and search by pictures? Yes you can! At school, click on the library catalog icon from the Novell screen (wherever you are). At home, click here to access the LMES catalog. View the screenshots below for more information.

Save the trees

Earth Day is Monday, April 22nd. Help save the trees by reducing your amount of paper consumption. Try the CleanPrint Chrome browser extension. CleanPrint is a free eco-friendly print tool that changes the way webpages print. Before printing or saving content you can add a note, eliminate images and unnecessary text, and adjust font size to save ink and paper.

National Poetry Month

In honor of National Poetry Month in April, introduce students to a variety of poets and poetic forms. Check out these poetry resources on the LMES Media Center website. Also try out the Word Mover app to create magnetic poetry on the iPad.
