Class of 2018

Work Ethic Diploma - Documentation Due by April 13

The Work Ethic Diploma was first offered in the 2015-16 school year as part of a LEAP (Labor Education Alignment Program) grant. The standards that students are required to meet to earn the Work Ethic Diploma reflect the skills and characteristics that are needed for students to be college and career ready. More than 30 Lakeway region businesses and industries guarantee an interview to students who have earned the Work Ethic Diploma and who meet other job-related qualifications.

Seniors will apply in their TNN classes. Students who successfully complete the application process will earn cords to wear during the graduation ceremony. The deadline for meeting requirements and submitting completed applications is April 13, 2018. Please click here to view the Tennessee Work Ethic Diploma standards. Please click here to view a list of frequently asked questions.

Students may use any provider they wish for the 10 panel drug test. To get reimbursed, they bring their receipt (must be under $50) and clean results to Mrs. Alvarado at the Hamblen County Board of Education.

College Signing Celebration

We want to celebrate our students' successes! On May 2-4, the Counseling Office will set up a photo booth in the cafeteria during lunch so that college/TCAT/military-bound students can have their pictures taken in apparel reflecting their school or military choice. On one of these days, please don't forget to wear something reflecting the school or military branch you have chosen and participate in this activity during lunch.

TN Promise Next Steps

Congratulations to all of the members of the Class of 2018 who have managed to stay eligible for the TN Promise Scholarship! Continue to read your e-mails from TN Promise. The next steps...
  • If you haven't already done so, apply to the TN Promise eligible school that you plan to attend (click here for a list of eligible schools).
  • After you have been admitted to the TN Promise eligible school, follow the directions for setting up your new student account.
  • Sign up for a new student orientation session (during which time you will meet with an advisor who will help you pick your classes for fall 2018).
  • Prior to new student orientation, check with your college to make sure that you have the ACT scores that you need. This will affect the courses for which you are allowed to sign up. (Information about WSCC orientation is included in this newsletter - keep reading).
  • Students who are beginning college in the fall of 2018 have until July 1, 2018, to submit their 8 community service hours. Submit them HERE - we do not submit them for you in the Counseling Office. If you turned in your community service form for attendance purposes for the March 20 Junior ACT date, you are still required to submit the hours using the on-line form to get credit for TN Promise hours.
  • If you have been selected for FAFSA verification, you must provide the requested documents to the financial aid office of the school that you plan to attend ASAP. If you need help, please see your counselor or Mrs. Gillett.

WSCC Fall 2018 Orientation

First-time degree seeking students are required to sign up for New Student Orientation. Upon successful sign-up, students will attend an in-person Orientation to meet with an academic advisor and establish a course schedule for the upcoming semester. Orientation is designed to give students an overview of important information pertaining to attending Walters State Community College and being a successful college student. Students should regularly check their WS Senator Email account for information about Orientation. Orientation dates for the Morristown campus are:

April 14, 16

May 8, 21, 30

June 9, 14, 21, 26

July 10, 26

August 2, 21

For questions about orientation, please call WSCC Student Enrollment Services at 423-585-2685.

Next Steps for College-Bound Students

May 1 is National College Decision Day. This is the date by which many colleges and universities, including the University of Tennessee, require students to confirm their desire to attend the school by completing some type of formal acceptance of the admissions offer and by paying an enrollment deposit. If the school you plan to attend has given you this decision deadline, be sure to confirm your enrollment and pay your enrollment deposit by this date.

After you make a decision about which school to attend, regularly check your e-mail and student account (with the college) to see about signing up for orientation, securing housing, submitting immunization records, etc.

If you have received special education services (IEP) or have a 504 plan and think you want to request accommodations in college, be sure to contact the disability services coordinator at the school you plan to attend. While your IEP or 504 plan will not follow you to college, it is a good idea to request a copy from your case manager prior to graduation and keep it in a safe place. It may provide supporting information to a college if you request accommodations.

College Open House Dates

College visits can be extremely helpful as a student is making important decisions about to which schools he/she will apply and eventually about to which school he/she will eventually commit to attending. College visits and open house events often give students opportunities to learn about the application process, available financial aid and scholarships, housing options, and academic programs/majors. Students will generally be offered a tour of campus which includes dorms, dining and recreation facilities, student centers, and academic buildings. Setting foot on a college campus and experiencing some of the same things experienced by the college's students can help high school students decide if the school is a good "fit". Click the links below to register on-line for upcoming events. If these dates do not work, students may check college websites for other visit opportunities.

University of Tennessee Knoxville

TN Promise Community Service

In order to stay eligible for the TN Promise Scholarship, students must complete and submit 8 hours of community service between November 2 and July 1. Students do not turn these hours in to the Counseling Office - they submit them on-line here. Students who plan to attend TCAT and begin during the summer term must have their 8 community service hours submitted by April 1.

Students should keep track of the following information related to their community service so that they have what they need for on-line submission: place, date, number of hours, supervisor's name, supervisor's phone number, and supervisor's e-mail address.

More information may be found on the TN Promise website or in the green TN Promise student handbook that students received during the assembly on October 11. Students who did not attend the meeting on October 11 or pick up their student handbook may stop by the counseling office to get a copy.

Extended Hours

The West High Counseling Office will be open until 6:00 pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month to offer more availability for parents who are not able to come in during the school day. The next date for extended hours is December 14th - help will be available for FAFSA on this date until 6:00. Please stop by if you haven't submitted your FAFSA yet!
