Precepts
"Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best." - Henry Van Dyke
"You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can be grateful because thorn bushes have roses."
"Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness." - Leo Tolstoy
A Note From Mr. Nakano
We're adding elements of study skills learning as it pertains to long term projects and keeping track of 6 or 7 rotations each day.
Student Classroom Design
After measuring each piece of furniture, they had to create their own scale so that they could manipulate the furniture around on their drawing. Through their innovative design, we were able to add a reading/working tent and more table groups.
Unfortunately, their plans of a mattress and a ping pong table fell through as there just wasn't enough space or room in the budget :).
Growth Mindset
As we head towards middle school, one our focuses, as it has been all year, is developing a growth mindset. We started off with Kenny Rogers's song, "The Greatest." It's about a boy pitching to himself and missing each time. Many predicted he would hit the ball after the third attempt or "strike three." Instead, the boy swung and missed...and then proclaimed himself the best pitcher.
This month has been spent looking at perspective, not only their own but that of the characters they create in their writing. We saw six photographs of the same man, except each shot was by a different photographer, who was given a different background of the man. The photographer who thought the man was recovering from cancer showed him surrounded by light, while a dark shadow was cast over the photograph of the same man whose photographer was told he was an ex-con.
We looked out how our perceptions affect us and can also better a piece of writing as well.
