WALK-A-THON - UPDATE
Click here to listen to "voices" from the Walk-A-Thon.
The Mary Collins Education Foundation would like to extend a hearty THANK YOU to all of the walkers, volunteers, staff members, and donors who made the 2018 Walk-a-Thon one for the history books! Based on our tally so far, a total of 296 amazing students walked a total of 8,038 laps -- that is an incredible 1,607.6 miles!! That’s like walking from Petaluma to Lincoln, Nebraska! Stay tuned for final numbers, but we are thrilled to announce that if all pledges are collected, we will be very close to our fundraising goal for this event.
A special shout out to the classes who were at 100% participation:
Caudle, Akers-Bell, Howe, and Pellkofer
Honorable Mention (over 90%):
Ribeiro and Diego
And now’s the time to get those pledges collected! Pledge money is due by Friday, September 21. Remember that all those who turn in their pledges by the due date will be invited to a pizza party later this semester! Books earned as prizes during the Walk-a-Thon will be distributed after Fall Break.
It’s not too late to donate -- simply add your pledge to your child’s pledge form, or grab a new form from the office.
Special thanks to this year’s event coordinator, Gabriella St. Clair!

NEWS FROM THE GARDEN
Thank you to Mr. Wicks' class and volunteers for their efforts on the Taste of the Garden & Farm this week. Please be prepared to assist in anyway you can on your student's Taste of the Garden & Farm week. Please check in with your student's classroom teacher about how you can help out. Typically, we will need parental support in supervising the students during the preparation, assembly, and service stages, as well as with the clean-up. Two weeks ago, Ms. Howe's class and volunteers had the food ready and most of the dishes finished before the first service began at noon; pretty impressive! Below is the remaining schedule for you to plan accordingly:
- 10/24/18 Lewis
- 11/7/18 Pellkofer
- 11/28/18 Ruddell
- 12/12/18 Caudle
- 1/16/19 Akers-Bell
- 1/30/19 Diego
- 2/13/19 Yu
- 2/27/19 Ribeiro
- 4/10/19 Kavanaugh
- 4/24/19 Johnson
- 5/8/19 Cozza
- 5/22/19 McClure
The Taste of the Garden & Farm program is a scaled-down, more student-centric sampling of seasonal fruits and veggies; think Salad Bar 2.0. Without safe cooking options in the kitchen, the students have been choosing fresh/raw vegetarian options that come exclusively from Open Field Farm or our school garden. For this week, several classes assisted in harvesting two large bowls of lettuce, arugula, and a variety of young brassica greens. (See the picture above.)
Also, thank you to the volunteers that came out on Sunday to work on the Kindergarten yard green spaces. Additionally, we installed a mini-library in the garden near the Buddy Bench. Come check out the book selection, stay to read for a bit, or exchange a book with one from home! Thank you Girl Scout Troop 10976 for the wonderful addition to the garden.
This week in the garden the students have been filling two repaired raised beds with new soil (4/5), learned about plant volunteers and cleared some from crowding our lettuce and arugula plants in an activity called "Thanks, But No Thanks" (2/3); learned a variety of leaf shapes and explored for examples of each in our garden (K/1); learned about the odorous onion and other alliums, their collective ability to repel pests, and separated some bunching onions for planting around our delicate lettuces and other salad greens (4/5); learned non-destructive harvesting techniques and the importance of the leaf in the production of sugars while harvesting lettuce and other greens for this week's Taste of the garden & Farm (2/3 and 4/5); and received an introduction on the taxonomy of arthropods ('jointed or segmented legs") in an activity called "Bug Tally," which also reinforced the tallying skills they have been using in class (K/1).
Our Monarch Butterflies have been hatching from their chrysalides. The students have really taken to their classroom visitors and the related conservation efforts. So far we collected 12 eggs from our milkweed patch and 6 adults have been released, with 5 more still in pupal stage. Here is a video of one adult emerging from its chrysalis in my living room last weekend. Amazing!
See you in the garden!
Best,
Bryce Nahas, Garden Coordinator/Teacher

GREEN TEAM
Please help reduce the solid waste impact of our school by continuing to bring reusable plates, utensils, and napkin for the Taste of the Garden & Farm, held every other Wednesday throughout the year. Additionally, please remember to bring a reusable dinner kit to the Ice Cream & BBQ Social this evening. Thank you for your efforts.
Calling all forks, calling all forks! We need slightly used forks to reinforce our existing kitchen stock. Let's eliminate the need for disposable plastic utensils! Maybe a trip to Sack's, Alphabet Soup, or Goodwill, if you have time this weekend. Thanks.
On a related note, the Fall Petaluma River Clean-up event is this Saturday at Steamer's Landing. I won't be able to attend, but it would be great if some Cherry Valley peoples can help clean-up our local watershed! You can find more information here. ...
