Fall in Love with Learning
As readers, our first graders have been working hard learning new routines in our Daily 5 rotations. They are building stamina while reading on their own and/or with their peers. We are also focusing on story elements. When reading a “just right” books with your child ask them about the characters, character traits, setting and even the problem and solution in the story.
Our writing goal for this month is to focus on writing a complete sentence. We are learning about subject and predicates and how to make our sentences “pop” with describing words. Our first grade writers are also working hard at writing a small moment. They are learning how to take a personal experience and write about a small part of it. We are so proud of their hard work!!
This month our phonics block is focusing on short vowels along with blends and digraphs. Our first graders are learning how to break words apart as well as find vowels and constants within the words. They are also reviewing the kindergarten “snap words”. These are words they should know in a snap!! Try asking your child to clap out the syllables of some of these words.
Our mathematicians are very busy during math workshop. If you were to see them during this block of time you would see our first graders skip counting, jumping on the number line, comparing numbers, reading and creating story problems. They are even starting to use strategies to add and subtractJJ
We are so proud of our first graders and we look forward to watching them grow and learn new things!!!

Art at Laura Donovan School
The Art Room is buzzing with creativity. We are discovering our treasures through making art.
Visit Artsonia to view our Art
Each child has their own digital art portfolio in this online art gallery.
Artwork can be shared with friends and relatives. Also, art made at home can be uploaded to your child’s art gallery.
Mindfulness in the Art Room Sometimes we take short breaks during art class to learn mindfulness skills. Mindfulness practice helps us to be present and ready to learn.
Visit the Laura Donovan Art Web Page for more information about our art program.
