Facts About Earth

The Solar System

On Earth, specifically in the United States, we have 4 basic seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall in that order. They are caused by the Earth being tilted 23.5 degrees on its axis as it orbits around the sun. Rotation refers to Earth spinning on its axis and it causes night and day. Revolution refers to how long it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun. Whenever the Earth has completely orbited the Sun it has been a year! We get our energy here from the Sun, which creates energy from nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion is when two hydrogen atoms combine to make a helium atom and a lot of energy is produced. The components of our solar system are spherical because gravity is pulling them from all different directions. Light years is the distance it takes light to travel in one year. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Gravity is responsible for the formation of our universe. It holds up all the planets and gives them their shape.
