Conference Recap from AMEA Collegiate / Research Activities Vice-President Mark Nelson
We have had a busy year in the Collegiate/Research world. The recent AMEA In-Service Conference featured several outstanding clinicians on topics including how to talk with administrators, a choral conductor’s guide to working with strings, evaluation of music teachers, classroom management techniques, working in an urban school environment, transitioning from college student to professional teacher, practical instrument repair, using buckets to make music, and using online software for elementary school music. As the Vice-President of the area, I am grateful to all of our clinicians on the collegiate track of the conference: Rick Ghinelli, Guy Harrison, Theresa Hulihan, Jenny Nichols, Amorette Languell, Dennis Smith, Malinda Stratton, Nicolette Zillich, and Jenny Amaya.
ABODA News from President Bill Humbert
The Spring Semester is here and we are off and running. There are so many activities happening it sometimes makes our head spin. And then, Spring Break happens. We get to recharge our batteries for the final push. Take the time to relax so that you can return with a new sense of energy and excitement to your classroom.
Let’s see what is happening in the land of ABODA this spring…
· Over 180 ensembles participating in ABODA HS Area Concert Festival
· Over 80 ensembles participating in ABODA Elementary/Middle School Festivals
· HS Region Honor Band and Orchestra Festivals
· District Honor Band and Orchestra Festivals
· District Large Group Festival
· Spring Assessments
· Solo and Ensemble
· Elementary/Middle School All State
· HS All State Auditions
· Oh Ya…Spring Concerts and Musicals
Wow. Just your typical semester for the school music teacher…but wait…there is more. The final push is right around the corner. Your students are relying on you to stay energized, motivated, and excited about the weeks ahead. Here are some thoughts for you.
· Quality music selections played well will keep your students engaged. Keep your expectations high so your students will do the same
· Create a great learning atmosphere. Be Organized, Energized, and Approachable. And remember, it’s ok to smile and laugh every once and awhile
· Keep challenging your students musically and technically to the end. Don’t forget to hold them accountable to high performance standards
· Schedule frequent performances
· Use chamber music ensembles as a means to “change it up” and elevate their learning.
· Make sure that your students have every resource available to them (especially your time) to help them be successful
· Have your students set goals for the final 9 weeks of classes. Both individual and group goals can help them focus on the task at hand all the way to the end of the semester.
· Have a plan for every rehearsal. Start on time, end on time, never waste time and be prepared
Remember, with all of the information above, the most important items are listed here…your students are a reflection of you. Your work ethic and integrity will become theirs. And, most important of all, remember to have fun. We get to make music and amazing memories every day. For many of your students, your music class, is their favorite class, and their favorite part of the day. What a great opportunity we have. Enjoy the Ride.
