Coping with Exam Stress
1. Self-care: You need sleep! Try to get 8 hrs a night. Feed your mind positive thoughts; feed your body energy and nutrients!
2. Give yourself breaks: Make sure you prioritize and make time for breaks. Plan ahead of time. You'll be more productive!
3. Don't compare yourself: Focus on your own goals, not others' accomplishments. Your
only competition is yourself!
4. Reward Yourself: Acknowledge the effort that you are putting in. Be proud of yourself and treat yourself kindly!
5. Prepare Your Space: Create a calm, fun environment for studying with good lighting and a comfortable workspace.

Host Family Needed
We are looking for a host family for an Italian male student coming to join HHS as a senior in January for second semester. He has studied English for 11 years and is looking for a new experience. He is an avid tennis player but enjoys other sports like basketball. He is hoping to share Italian cuisine and teach his host family how to cook some traditional Italian meals.
If you are not able to host for the whole semester and would rather host for a couple of weeks, we are also looking for a Welcome Host Family which would be a 4-8 week commitment. This is a great way to see if hosting an international student works for your family.
Hosting an international student is a wonderful opportunity. Not only do you get to help demonstrate what a great place we live in, but you also make a connection with someone that be a lifelong friendship. Being a host family also comes with a monthly stipend. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to Mr. Longoria (alongoria@hopkinton.k12.ma.us).
Seal of Biliteracy/AAPPL Testing
Dear Junior & Senior Parents/Guardians:
We are pleased to announce that Hopkinton High School will be granting the state-sponsored Seal of Biliteracy award to qualified graduating seniors this year. This award recognizes outstanding achievement in language study, granting students highly deserved recognition for demonstrating proficiency (writing, speaking, and reading comprehension) in at least two languages. Students are eligible to earn the Seal if they are a junior or senior and have been studying a world language since middle school, or if they are a native or heritage speaker of another language.
All students who demonstrate scores of “intermediate high” or above in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the language tested and have an MCAS score in English Language Arts of 472 or above, will be eligible for The Seal. Students who score “advanced low” or above in the language tested, and have a score of 501 or above on the English Language Arts MCAS will be eligible for the Seal with Distinction.
Hopkinton High School will be using an exam called the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) to determine our students’ proficiency levels in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin), Portuguese, and Spanish. There is no cost to juniors or seniors for this exam, and it is optional. If your student is a speaker of a language other than those offered on the AAPPL exam, there are other exams they can take in order to be eligible for the Seal. These exams are optional and also at no cost to interested juniors and seniors. All exams for the Seal of Biliteracy will be given in school on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, and Thursday, March 2, 2023, with a make-up date of Tuesday, March 7, 2023. Students will test in the morning on these days and return to class once they have completed the specific components given on those days. Seniors who took a Seal of Biliteracy exam last year, and would like to retake certain components of the exam, can do that as well on these dates.
Students interested in taking an exam for the Seal of Biliteracy should plan to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, during FLEX block. During this meeting, students will receive additional information about these exams and have the opportunity to sign up for the actual exam. If you are interested in taking an entire exam or at least one component for the Seal of Biliteracy, please use this link to express your interest. Note that this link does not sign a student up for any exam.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Evan Bishop, Principal
Ashley Bell, District World Language Subject Matter Leader (abell@hopkinton.k12.ma.us)

The Science of Well-Being for Teens
A recent survey found that 37% of teens say they have poor mental health. This 6-week course aims to curb this mental health crisis by bringing together the best insights from Dr. Laurie Santos’ popular Yale course Psychology and the Good Life. In this course, you will explore what the field of psychology teaches us about how to be happier, how to feel less stressed, and how to thrive in high school and beyond. The lessons along with short weekly ‘happiness homework’ assignments will ultimately prepare you to put these scientific findings into practice. The ultimate goal is for you to feel better and build healthier habits. Parents, teachers, and other professionals supporting teenagers may also find the course beneficial.
Note: This course does not confer Yale University grade, credit or student status.
