The Eagle Express

THE NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THE WEEK OF NOV. 30 - DEC. 4

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Howdy Eagles!

I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday break! I hope you all ate too much, slept too much, watched too much TV and got plenty of time with your loved ones.

We are three short weeks away from finishing up the fall semester. Hard to believe the school year is close to being half-way complete, but time sneaks up on all of us. That being said, I want to remind everyone how important it is that we maximize every instructional minute available.

Students - I need your attendance to improve! Looking at the attendance rates below, you'll see what I mean. We've done a great job so far this year with attendance...don't drop the ball now! Please remember that you can/will lose credit in the classes you've worked so hard in all semester if your attendance falls below 90%!

Teachers - please make sure our students are engaged in learning from bell to bell, every class, every day. Just two underutilized minutes per class adds up to approximately three hours of lost instructional time per course. Every second counts!

I appreciate each and every one of you for making this the #besthighschoolontheplanet everyday! Let's all work together to have a strong finish to the fall semester.

Sincerely,

Brandi Hosack

Principal

SHOUT-OUTS

SEL Team Rocks!

A HUGE thank-you to the SEL team for making The Akins Wheelchair Challenge a huge success! We had nearly 20 students in wheelchairs for a total of 13 days; this was truly an empathy project! Our feedback forms allowed students and staff to reflect upon how they were treated, what was challenging , and what was different from their typical day. Each morning, SEL teachers took new challenges, helped Mrs. Hadley (Archer's mother) fit students for chairs and T-shirts, and helped students get their day started. At the end of the day, SEL teachers collected chairs and feedback forms, as well as accepted new challenges. The Akins family became more aware of accessibility issues people with disabilities might face, while raising money for automatic doors to increase access. A big thank you to everyone who challenged a friend/teacher/AP!

CANstruction WINS!

Congratulations to Ms. Pierce and the CANstruction team for their wins! Akins won the Best Meal Award and the Best High School Award!

TAFE Members Headed to State!

A big congratulations to our TAFE members and sponsors, Cecilia Gutierrez, Misty Lindsey & Susie Gielow! We have over 20 students qualifying for state that competed in the TAFE Region 13 conference and/or that scored exceptionally well on the Education Leadership Fundamentals exam. Some students even scored advanced in their competition which could take them to Nationals this summer. Great job to all! See below for a picture of our state-bound students.

Legal Eagles Win at Mock Trial!

Congratulations to Dr. Katz and the Law interns for their big win at Mock trial (their first competition, ever, by the way)! Akins HS was represented by two teams and BOTH qualified for State, with one team coming in 1st place and the other 5th. We are all very proud of the hard work exhibited by all!
