This Time It's Personal
March Forth on March Fourth
MARCH 4th marked Beautycounter's 5th anniversary and, as always, we celebrate with advocacy!
Every March, Beautycounter consultants meet with their local representatives to advocate and share their stories on WHY we need more health protective laws in the personal care industry.
We advocate for YOU: our friends, our family, and even perfect strangers because everyone deserves access to safer products.
I shared this on Facebook, but I know many of you aren't on there and this is something I feel so strongly about and wanted to share again.
For the past 4 years when March rolls around our advocacy efforts are kicked up a notch. This year is no different, except there has been a bit more reflecting on what this means to me. Because this time, it’s personal.
I am on this mission because I don’t want Evelyn and Elijah to grow up and have to read labels to make sure there isn’t any harmful ingredients in their products.
Because I have seen my mom be diagnosed and fight breast cancer that wasn’t related to genetics.
Because I have been touched by too many family members and friends fighting cancers that used to be a rare occurrence.
Because there are too many people I know dealing with infertility and hormone issues.
Because I will never forget the night when Elijah was 8 months old and I came home, flipped his “natural” baby wash over only to find ingredients linked to known hormone disruption and cancer on the label.
Because I want to live a long healthy life and hopefully someday have grandkids to chase around.
Because there are ingredients currently allowed in our products that can cause significant health issues. I don’t want that happening to anyone else.
Because I want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Because on a fateful night in June when I wasn’t looking for anything else, Lucas saw an opportunity to build a rewarding career while making a significant social impact.
Because I knew I had to share this opportunity with others even if they thought this wasn’t for them.
Because there are toxins everywhere in our environment. It’s in in our food, air we breathe, and the products we use everyday. It adds up.
Here are the facts,
- that childhood asthma has tripled in frequency since the early 1970’s
- learning disabilities affect 1 in 6 children. 1 in every 68 children born in America is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (CDC)
- Leukemia and brain cancer, the two main types of pediatric cancer have increased by nearly 40% since the 1970’s.
- Childhood obesity has more than tripled since the 1970’s
- Type 2 diabetes has become epidemic among children.
Because sadly our government has not passed a major federal law related to personal care products since 1938. The current version is less than two pages long and has substantial loopholes. There are only 30 ingredients banned or regulated where the European Union bans or regulates 1,400.
Because every single one of us deserves better and I am willing to fight for this.
Because this time, it’s personal.
On Through the month of March I'm going to ask that you text "BETTERBEAUTY" to 52886. It takes less than a minute to contact congress and it is so impactful.
Other Swaps I've Made Around the House
Small changes make a big impact!
Here is a sprinkling of some of my favorite swaps! The bulk of these was to ditch plastic that is full of BPA/BPS and phthalates which disrupt your hormones. Rezip snack bags, Lunchskins snack bags, If You Care snack bags, Swell bottles, Ball jars with Recap lids for protein shakes, essential oils for air fresheners, Eco Vessel snack bowls, Pura Stainless bottles for the kids' sippy cups and travel bottles (or Klean Kanteen), and my favorite antique cast iron in place of Teflon! I didn’t even touch on cleaning products!
In Other News!
We will have about 12,000sq ft of useable space, the build out will include a salon (with safer ingredients), coffee/smoothie bar, a common area to sit/relax/study, chiropractor, massage, nutrition, HUGE CrossFit space, Synergy (CrossFit/boot camp without the barbell), and Kids class area, 2,500 sq ft of astro turf, batting cages, yoga/dance room (upstairs), conference room for classes, offices, coaches room, a HUGE locker room with 4 showers, changing rooms and a place to hang out.
And, plans for 1/2 a basketball court and traditional gym equipment are coming in the future.
To say that we are excited is an understatement and this move is huge for the Hudson and surrounding communities.
We love our C1 Athletics family and can’t wait! I would love for you to come check out the space and we are currently in the middle of the CrossFit Open and doing Friday Night Lights at the gym every Friday through March 23rd. There are themes each week, incredible energy and so much fun!

For those of you not familiar with the Open, this is what it is!
The Open is the first qualifying stage of the CrossFit Games. Any athlete who wants to compete at the Games must first make it through the Open in their region.
While the purpose of the Open is to find the fittest athletes in each region to move on to the regionals, it’s also an opportunity for any athlete at any level to participate in the competition. It can add meaning and purpose to your training while also bringing your gym’s community closer together. (As a rule of thumb, the Open is the time of year where we see many people achieve important firsts: bodyweight snatch, muscle-ups, toes-to-bars, handstand push-ups, double-unders, etc.)
Most importantly, the Open will also give you some interesting data on your performance in the gym, which can be a guide for setting realistic goals for the following year.
