Making Boone Better and Safer:
AISD Facility Condition Assessment
Austin ISD is in the process of compiling campus’ needs for a possible bond election either this coming May, or more likely, in November of 2017. As part of this process, a research team has been assigned to evaluate every AISD campus to identify areas in building maintenance issues, grounds issues, playground needs, instructional space needs, etc., for possible inclusion in the bond package. I recently received the draft report from this team based on their campus review this summer. I am attaching their initial reports in this email.
In order to ensure that we have covered all of Boone’s perceived needs, I am asking all of our families and staff to review the reports and provide feedback on other areas of concern or need that could be addressed through this bond proposal. The review team will be meeting with our CAC at our next meeting on October 27th in the Library at 3:15 p.m.
Please take a few minutes to review these documents. I have created a Google survey that I am asking you to use in order to provide feedback that we can share with the review team on October 27th. You are also welcome to attend the CAC meeting if you would like.

Boone Playground Improvement Committee:
In line with the Facility Condition Assessment mentioned above, I would also like to form a Boone Playground Improvement Team. The primary purpose of this team will be to continue the work started by the PTA last year in examining ways that we can increase and improve the current playground equipment here at Boone. The PTA has been raising money last year and will continue that process this year to have funds available to work on playground improvements. Last year the PTA did have a fabulous volunteer come up with an initial Boone Schoolyard Master Plan. We are now ready for the next step.
Building on that plan, we need to evaluate this proposal for viability, look into what is possible, examine any district constraints, and devise a multi-year implementation plan including actual equipment costs, location of the new equipment, and timeline. My goal is to have the equipment selected and timeline created by the early Spring in order to present to the PTA for feedback and approval by early April. Your voice is important in this work for the sake of our Boone students. The committee will 2-3 times a month for the next several months. The meeting times and dates for the team will be forthcoming pending the responses received on the survey.
If you are interested in being a part of this work and building to the future for our Boone students, please use the following link to provide me with your contact information. I would like to begin meeting with this team as early as the beginning of November, so I need your requests for membership in as soon as possible. Student Enrichment News:
We've invited the Girls Empowerment Network (GEN) to give an assembly for 4th-5th grade girls at Boone on Friday, October 28 at 8:00 am. GEN is an Austin non-profit organization with the mission to "support and guide girls to make wise choices as the navigate the unique pressures of girlhood. GENaustin increases the social and academic success of girls by:
1. Equipping them with the skills they need to navigate the dangers and pressures of adolescence.
2. Forging healthy, supportive bonds so they know they are never alone.
3. Surrounding them with relatable role models who encourage, inspire, & guide."
We've also arranged for the entire fourth grade to participate in a 5 week long writing workshop with Badgerdog, a creative writing program supported by the Austin Public Library Foundation. "Badgerdog sends professional writers into classrooms across Central Texas, where they inspire students to embrace the challenge and beauty of writing. The teaching artists follow Badgerdog’s READ-WRITE-SHARE teaching model.
Lessons engage students through creative and critical thinking, and invite young writers to explore how language is used to create meaning and affect readers. All lessons are TEKS-aligned and tailored to support grade-level curriculum." The fourth grade team is currently working out scheduling details.
