Definition
The act of using the internet or any electronic device such as a computer, cell phone or tablet to repeatedly harass someone. It's a very harmful method of bullying because the bully can attack anytime, anywhere and even anonymously.
The Bully
- Often, this person has been a victim of cyber bullying himself/herself
- Typically has low self esteem
- Sometimes does it just for fun
- Thinks its just a joke
- Can hide behind a shield of anonymity
The Victim
Anyone can become a victim of cyber bullying. However, the following groups tend to be victimized more than others:
- Those with low and failing grades
- Students in middle school and junior high
- Students who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
- Students with low self-esteem
How Does CyberBullying Effect its Victims?
- Poor school performance
- Low self-esteem
- Increase in delinquent behaviors (drug use, alcohol use, gang activity)
- Feelings of loneliness, humiliation, insecurity, fearfulness
- Increase in aggression and violence
- Suicide (in extreme cases)
