Definition

The act of using the internet or any electronic device such as a computer, cell phone or tablet to repeatedly harass someone. It's a very harmful method of bullying because the bully can attack anytime, anywhere and even anonymously.

The Bully

  • Often, this person has been a victim of cyber bullying himself/herself
  • Typically has low self esteem
  • Sometimes does it just for fun
  • Thinks its just a joke
  • Can hide behind a shield of anonymity

The Victim

Anyone can become a victim of cyber bullying. However, the following groups tend to be victimized more than others:


  • Those with low and failing grades
  • Students in middle school and junior high
  • Students who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
  • Students with low self-esteem

How Does CyberBullying Effect its Victims?

  • Poor school performance
  • Low self-esteem
  • Increase in delinquent behaviors (drug use, alcohol use, gang activity)
  • Feelings of loneliness, humiliation, insecurity, fearfulness
  • Increase in aggression and violence
  • Suicide (in extreme cases)
