HES Shark Scoop
October 28, 2022
From Principal Cutone
Dear Harwich Elementary School Families,
Happy Friday! As we end October, things are clicking along here at HES, and I am just so proud to see our Sharks thriving. In addition to the fabulous classroom learning experiences that our teachers provide, our reading and math interventionists are delivering academic support that targets identified gaps in skills for students who need them. Additionally, many of our students are happily participating in afterschool clubs or chorus, and a group of fourth-grade students have signed up for instrumental music with our new band instructor, John Pells. Finally, some students are receiving tiered social emotional support through our guidance department. Here are a few ways that our guidance team is working to actively assist students:
We utilize "Tag a Shark." Please consider emailing or calling Ms. Malinowski or Ms. Collura, our school adjustment counselors, if there is a day that your child might need a little extra care. We know life happens. It could be that your pet is not well, a family member is ill, or your basement flooded. You don't necessarily need to share anything with us about the event or situation; we just want to make sure we do all we can to support our SHARKS each and every day, particularly if they may be feeling sad or upset. If you say, "Tag my child", we will simply put out a request for a little TLC for your child on that particular day.
Another program that our guidance department uses is called "3 for 3". At HES we want to make sure that all our SHARKS feel safe and connected. Throughout the year, many students will have an opportunity to develop a relationship with a trusting adult at school (other than their teachers) who shares their interests, treasures, or talents. Students may visit with their mentors briefly during the week at random times (3 minutes, 3 times a week = 3 for 3) in order to strengthen their connection to our school community and to foster increased belongingness.
What do you get when you bring children, dogs and books together? You get happy, confident children who love to read. This year, we are pleased to welcome back our dog handlers and their pups from TDI International. This is a school-wide program occurring throughout the year in which each classroom has a scheduled dog visit when students learn all that goes into their training, along with the dogs performing a few tricks! A small grouping of students are then invited to join the dogs in a smaller room where they each get to read a book. Students leave feeling encouraged and confident. After the visits, many students say they "feel so calm and at peace". Parents are welcome to reach out to the guidance or admin team should they want their child to get some extra care with a special dog visit.
Please let us know if you have any questions about these programs or if you would like to share a need with our guidance team. Ms. Collura and Ms. Malinowski are knowledgeable resources, and they are available to help all HES families.
Monday is Halloween, and I want to take this opportunity to remind families that we do not celebrate Halloween at HES. We are committed to creating a welcoming atmosphere in our school and believe that this practice contributes to a sense of belonging for all. Some individual classes may have chosen or will choose to celebrate the harvest season with specific activities, assignments, or read aloud choices throughout October and November. That being said, please do not send your children to school in costume on Monday. Please reach out if you have any questions.
I am still looking for School Council parents and community representatives. School Councils are required for public schools by Massachusetts general law, and they have the responsibility to:
adopt educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
identify the educational needs of students attending the school
review the annual budget for the building
formulate a School Improvement Plan
Composed of parents, educators, and community members who do not have children in the school, a School Council must have parity of representation with school personnel who are on the School Council.
All are welcome to join; the only requirement is that you care about Harwich Elementary School and want to help us be the best that we can be. Whether you have previously served on the School Council or you would like to try something new, I encourage you to submit your name and a brief statement of interest to our PTO president, Crystal Tanguay @ Crystalhespto@gmail.com.
Our first meeting is on Monday, November 14, 2:45 - 3:45pm in the Professional Library at HES. Future meetings will be held at 2:45pm on January 30, March 13, and May 8. Thank you for considering this important work. Have a great weekend!
My best,
Christie

Queridas famílias da escola primária de Harwich,
feliz sexta-feira!
Nós utilizamos "Tag a Shark".
A Sra. Collura e a Sra.
Meu melhor,
Christie
