We are excited to announce that the BHS Broadcasting Program has been chosen as a Voya Unsung Heroes® NATIONAL finalist!!
Voya Unsung Heroes® began in 1995 as a way for Voya Financial® to demonstrate its commitment to the education community. Grants are given to K-12 educators utilizing new teaching methods and techniques that improve learning.
Each year, educators submit applications for a Voya Unsung Heroes grant by describing projects they have initiated or would like to pursue. Each project is judged on its:
• Innovative method
• Creativity
• Ability to positively influence the students
100 finalists are selected to receive a $2,000 grant. At least one grant is awarded in each of the 50 states, provided at least one qualified application was received from each state. Winners are selected by Scholarship America, a national non-profit educational support and student aid service organization.
As a finalist, BHS Broadcasting will receive a $2,000 award and is qualified for additional financial awards: $25,000 for first place; $10,000 for second place; and $5,000 for third place. The top winners are selected by the Educators Advisory Board, consisting of six distinguished educators from across the United States.
Wish us good luck!!!

2015 ALABAMA BOYS STATE
June 3, 2015
Buckhorn High School is proud to have three of our finest senior boys, Sam Akers, Sean Bengs, and Sam Downard, represent our school as well as Madison County at the 2015 Alabama Boys State Convention. Sam A., Sean, and Sam D. each lead their peers in one of the very prestigious elected positions. While all delegates are required to hold some sort of office, there are very few elected positions, with the majority of offices being appointed. The election process at Boys State consists of a city and county caucus, a county and state convention and the general election. To have all three of our delegates elected by their peers just further validates their selection as representatives of Buckhorn High School, and we could not be any prouder! Go Bucks!!!
-----
What is Boys State?
Alabama Boys State is one of the highest honors granted to Alabama students. Students from across the state are chosen based on their demonstration of leadership, hard work, strong morals, and motivation in school and community activities. Boys State week is a full and active week held on the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
At Boys State, student delegates will find the opportunity to build new friendships, participate in a mock government, and hear from and meet a diverse array of Alabama leaders such as Congressmen, state elected officials, business leaders, civic leaders, and others. Delegates will have the opportunity to join interest groups that focus on their individual areas of interest such as law school, fire college, law enforcement academy, aerospace academy, lobbyists, city government, county government, constitutional convention, engineer/computer academy, and environmental interest group. Delegates will also have activity time during which they can participate in recreational activities such as basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, academic bowl, etc.
The American Legion believes there is no better way to assure the survival of our republic than to train our young people in the ideals and objectives of American government. By teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. These are the distinguished, long-standing objectives of American Legion Boys States.
They are accomplished through a unique summertime program, one that emphasizes not classroom lectures or textbook learning, but participation and personal experience in a model state, complete with its governing bodies and elected officials.
Boys State was founded and its courses of instruction were designed to supplement the information taught in high school civic classes. Boys State teaches that our form of government is good but that its preservation depends on intelligent, informed, and loyal citizens in combination with an honest and impartial administration of government activities.
