Indian Hills Library Newsletter

November 2019

News from the Library

This newsletter will bring you information each month letting you know about library happenings. It will keep you up-to-date on student work, activities, and other projects in the library. We value our school community and encourage everyone to be involved and a part of the IH library!

Meet the Library Volunteers!

Lynette Hudson

This is Lynette's second year volunteering in the Indian Hill's library. We are lucky to share her with the lunchroom, where she is employed, working with students during their lunch time. Lynette and her husband, Steve, are the parents of two Indian Hills students, Natalie a second grader and Kaelyn a fourth grader. A love of reading runs in their family!

Visiting Author - Bridget Heos!

Our visiting author, Bridget Heos, visited Indian Hills on Oct. 21st! She did five different presentations and met with students in PreK through sixth grade. She shared information about her writing process, read a number of her books, and was a wealth of knowledge related to her nonfiction books! She also did a book signing and took pictures with students. It was an wonderful experience.

Thank you to everyone who helps support the library and a special thank you to our PTO for helping sponsor this event! We couldn't do these exciting events without our amazing community - THANK YOU!

William Allen White Award Field Trip

Students and parents went on a library field-trip on Saturday, Oct. 5th to the William Allen White Awards Ceremony at Emporia State University. We met Jason Reynolds, author of Ghost, and Sara Pennypacker, author of Pax. Both authors won the William Allen White Award for the 2018-2019 school year. There is a winner from the 3rd-5th grade list and the 6th-8th grade list.

Students were able to meet the authors and get their books signed, play games, take part in a Kahoot competition, program robotics, and attend the awards ceremony. It was a fantastic day spent celebrating reading!

Book Tasting

Last week, fifth graders did a "book tasting" during their library lesson. Students get a variety of books "served" to them and sample a book of their choosing. There is a stack in the middle of the table for them to also choose from. Students read the book for 3-4 minutes, decide if they're interested in the book, and discuss the book with their table. On the next round, students can return their book or keep it to check out, then move to a different table, choose a new book, and the process repeats! Book tastings are a fun way to introduce students to new authors and genres. Books and food have a lot in common - you don't know if you'll like something new until you try it!
