ACADEMIC UPDATES
Math
7on/7A
We have started our Geometry Unit. This tends to be one that students either love or really struggle with as it is very visual/spatial. If students are struggling, please see the attached help session schedule as well as remember that videos of the lessons are posted in google classroom to review. We are starting with triangles, learning the different types of triangles and how to classify them and the triangle sum theorem that states angles in a triangle must equal 180 degrees. We will learn the triangle inequality theorem also which states that the sum of the two smaller sides must be larger than the longer side to make a triangle. We will work with straws in class to explore this theorem which students always enjoy. We will work with compasses and protractors to construct triangles and figure out which triangles are possible only one way, many ways, or impossible. (MGSE7.G.2) We will also be working with identifying different types of angles (supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent) and how to use equations and those angles to find unknown angles. (MGSE7.G.5) We will have a quiz over this material on Thursday, February 20th. Then we will begin discovering pi and circumference and area of circles. (MGSE7.G.4)Please remember that if students have questions, need help, or extra support. There is a math help session every day. The schedule is below.
MATH HELP SESSIONS

8A
We took our Unit 6 test Thursday and will begin our last 8th grade unit, Unit 7: Solving Systems of Equations on Friday. This unit students will be analyzing a d solving pairs of linear equations through graphing and algebraically. This unit will conclude the end of February. We will then begin some 9th grade material and they will be working on their final line design project. The semester moves quickly after February. Reminder that math has help sessions daily!
Social Studies
We will finish up our Middle East History unit with a test on Tuesday, 2/11. Please make sure your student is utilizing the resource document found on Google Classroom under Classwork and then Middle East History. Following the test, we will begin our unit on Africa History. Students will have a test on Africa History on Friday, February 28th. Information will be forthcoming about volunteer needs for our Junior Achievement Finance Park trip during the week of 3/9. Please consider volunteering-this trip requires parent involvement to be successful! Thanks for your continued support!
Science
We have started off our ecology unit learning about abiotic and biotic factors, environmental relationships and energy flow. Next week, we will dive into food chains and food webs.
We will have an ecology vocabulary quiz on Thursday, February 13. The words on the quiz can be found in your child’s ISN and/or Google Classroom.
We will then learn about symbiotic relationships, predator/prey relationships and matter cycles.
Reminder that science help sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday morning at 8am.
Thanks! Ms. Johnson, Ms. Kane, Ms. Moore, Ms. Chereck, Ms. Villiume, and Ms. Fairlie
Reading
Reading classes have wrapped up their informational text project and are now learning about different text structures. We will have a short quiz on Thursday, February 13.
Near the end of the month, we will start a novel study with a book called The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani. Reading students will not need to purchase their own book.
Read anything great lately? My favorite in January was Legend by Marie Lu. Currently, I’m enjoying Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus.
Language Arts
We are jumping in to our next unit of study, Unit 4! The test for this is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28th.
In this unit, we will be looking at the development of theme (RL2), how figurative language + and sound devices contribute to the larger meaning and tone of a text (RL4), how a character’s point of view is developed and shaped by specific parts of a text (RL6), and identifying two of more central ideas of a nonfiction text (RI2).
Grammatically, 7th graders will be continuing their study of phrases and clauses, and delving into developing compound and complex sentences. 8A students will be continuing with verbals (specifically participles and infinitives), and beginning work with active and passive voice.
Please see below for information about the Young Georgia Author’s Writing Competition.
Sincerely,
Mr. Shea (maternity leave sub for Mrs. Patel), Mrs. Barksdale, Ms. Irvin, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Matthews
Spanish
¡Hola padres!
In Spanish, we are wrapping up Chapter 2 with a Lesson Test on Tuesday, February 11. Students have been given a study guide in class this week and have had the week to work on it and ask questions. All vocabulary, materials and instructions for review/practice are available in Google Classroom. We ask that you please check in with your child regarding their daily study time as they continue their journey en español!
Don’t forget, weekly help sessions are Tuesday mornings at 8am!
Muchas gracias,
Srta. Brown, Sra. Clark & Srta. Underwood
French
Bonjour parents,
In lesson 2A.1, students are continuing to discuss activities they do and like to do. This lesson has a new big focus on verb conjugations where we’re veering away from just saying what we “like to do…”. We’re doing a lot of conjugation practice in class (written & spoken). We’ll have a quiz at the end of the week (February 13th). The next lesson will be over Yes/No questions. We can ask each other already “Do you like to study?”, but there are different ways in French to pose a Yes/No question. Answering in the negative, “No, I don’t…” is a part of the lesson as well. The cultural lesson of Lesson 2A has to do with French high schools: their grade system, their graduation test, etc… In a couple more weeks we will be able to test over Lesson 2A.
Multicultural night is coming up- Tues March 3rd! We spoke with French Clubbers about the night and requested their help to support the France table by providing food, serving the food, or providing display pieces. ANY French student is welcome to support the France table! We’ll talk about it in our classes soon, too. Sign up here. Thank you for anything you’re able to donate! More info to come.
Latin
2/10-2/14
- We will begin a gladiator mini-project where students are introduced to different types of gladiators one may encounter in the arena. We are shifting our vocab and culture quiz to Wednesday, 02/12
