Message from the Principal
Black Bear Community,
We have successfully wrapped up the second week of school! Tuesday, our Pre-K and Kindergarten students joined us and have been busily learning routines on how to be a student in our school, the joys of our playground, and connecting with our wonderful staff every day. We marvel at the independence so many of our youngest students are showing!
After dropping off their students at the classroom, we had a large turnout for our Boohoo Woohoo Coffee Social, sponsored by our wonderful PTA. There was a nice mix of families new to our school, and families who have been down this road before. A few understandable tears were shed as we marked the importance of this day for our families. Welcome to all of you new families into our Tualatin Elementary family.
Speaking of our playground, our students have been fascinated by the big tractor that is working on our closed off areas, prepping it for the addition of bark chips. We are looking forward to the day when our whole playground is open for our students. Fortunately, they have taken the closure in stride. We anticipate our full playground opening soon.
Coming up on our calendar is our Garden Work Party tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 AM - 11 AM. Please consider helping out! Our garden is a cherished part of our school community. Also coming up is our Back-to-School Night, which will be on September 29th from 5:30-7:00. Details about the event will be in next week's edition of the Black Bear Bits. Please be on the lookout for future events coming up in October!
Working with you for kids,
Jim
Attention 5th Graders!
As we start this school year, we are excited to introduce a new leadership program. Our Den Leaders will be 5th grade students who are interested in volunteering and helping around our school. We are looking for students who are excited about helping, want to learn more about leadership, and love being a part of the Black Bear family! Events and activities will include helping both during the school day and at before or after school events!
Forms have been handed out by teachers and are in the newsletter attachments. Extras can also be picked up in the office. Complete this form and return it to your teacher before October 1st.
Please contact Mrs. Fetherston if you have any questions.

Memory Book Photos and Volunteers NEEDED
Hello Black Bear Families! Welcome back! Another amazing school year is upon us and we are excited to see all this year will bring. With the new school year comes the preparations and assembly of another fabulous memory book and our volunteers are eager to get started.
Now that the first weeks of school have come and gone, we would like to start accepting photo submissions from families and staff from the first days of school. Please send your photo submissions to tualatinschoolphotos@gmail.com by October 28th.
We have an amazing committee of three parent volunteers working on the memory book this year and will introduce you to them soon, so you can be familiar with their names and faces. However, we welcome anyone else who may be interested in joining the memory book committee. If you want to learn more and/or are interested in joining this committee, please reach out to Ashley Young at tualatinmemorybook@gmail.com.

Volunteer in our school library!
Want to help our school library? We need a Book fair chairperson for our book fair that is coming up at the end of September. We also will need lots of volunteers to make it successful. All proceeds from the book fair buy new books for our school library.
The library also needs book pickup & shelving volunteers for Monday and Thursdays 8:00am to 9:30am and for Wednesday afternoon library. This volunteer position is every week and requires a lot of lifting and bending and organizing shelves. Different people can volunteer for different days.
The library could also use some volunteers to help with OBOB (Oregon Battle of the Books). This volunteer would help a couple times a month during lunch and recess.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions please email Kathleen Cunnington at kcunnington@ttsd.k12.or.us.
